PS5 Restock: More Units By Second Half of 2022, Says AMD

Sony PlayStation 5 has had a bitter-sweet journey ever since it was launched. It came loaded with incredible new features, an amazing DualSense controller, and some great games. But at the same time, it has faced massive stock availability issues since its inception. Days ago, it received a massive restock, so maybe that issue would now slowly resolve. It seems like now we won’t be able to see such a big restock for some time.

PS5 Lack of Supply To Continue

How To Buy A PS5 - Complete Guide

A few days ago, Phil Spencer (the head of Xbox) clearly stated that the lack of supply of consoles will continue to next year. Now the CEO of AMD, Lisa Su, is also warning the fans about the continuing lack of supply. As you may well know, AMD is a prominent manufacturer of processors and graphics chips for consoles. This also includes Sony PS5 consoles.

“I expect it to be from June-September of next year 2022 when, perhaps, it will be possible to go down to a video game store or a department store to buy a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X without it being an impossible task”, Su said.

“We have always gone through cycles of ups and downs, in which demand has exceeded supply, or vice versa. This time it is different. The start-up of a new plant can take between 18 and 24 months, and in some cases even plus. These investments started maybe a year ago ”, Su said.

At the beginning of the year, Su stated that the supply shortage might be over by the latter half of 2021. Well, that didn’t happen but mid-2022 does seem like a more realistic timeline for such an issue. Since you are here, you might be aware that PS5 is caught between this seemingly endless cycle of high demand and low supply. But what is the major reason for this?

Why is PS5 Facing Lack of Supply?

First of all, it’s not just PS5 that is facing the supply crisis as the pandemic has hit all of the console manufacturing industry. The primary reason for the lack of supply is the shortage of chips and semiconductor materials. Till these materials aren’t available, these chips cannot be made. These chips are a major component of the CPUs and GPUs of electronic devices.

These materials needed to make the chips aren’t being excavated because of the pandemic and till then, all manufacturing is stuck. These chips are also required in the automobile industry which has also taken a severe hit. Now, this was the primary reason for the lack of supply. Another reason for it is exceptionally high demand. In the pandemic, people are exploring their passions and hobbies increasingly. As you may have guessed, gaming is one of them.

Hence, the demand for consoles is rising at a fast pace amidst COVID-19 and the supply has taken a hit because of the basic material shortages. This has trapped PS5 in a vicious cycle of demand-supply which is getting more and more intense. It is our hope that all of it would end as soon as the pandemic ends, and the console industry emerges stronger than ever.
