RUMOR: Sony Will Allegedly Acquire Square Enix Montreal

Many questions have been raised as to why just Square Enix Montreal was bought, rather than the company’s Tokyo headquarters. The truth may originate from an even bigger deal involving Sony.

Gaming companies are being bought and sold at a rapid pace. Microsoft purchased Activision Blizzard, Take-Two’s partnership with Zynga, and more recently, Embracer Group acquired Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal, and Square Enix Montreal — among other examples.

Sony x Square Enix?

Games Beat columnist Jeff Grubb has sparked new suspicions about a possible takeover of Square Enix Montreal, amid the $300 million purchase from Embracer Group. In his post, he clarified that the major speculation was that Sony was considering purchasing Square Enix.

There are several theories floating about as to why some of Japan’s leading video game publishers have decided to close certain western studios. However, none of them are supported by any evidence. Additionally, these deals can collapse or even be revoked, which as Grubb pointed out is a common occurrence.

Grub also reported in March that Sony was contemplating a large purchase “soon”.

As early as January, when Bungie (Destiny) joined PlayStation Studios, Sony CEO Jim Ryan announced that the company will be making more acquisitions. Jeff Grubb is fair in pointing out that everything is merely conjecture and fans shouldn’t take it as a fact. Only time will tell if this rumor is accurate or not.

At the moment, Square Enix is working on Final Fantasy XVI. The game is already in its final stages of development and will solely be for the PlayStation 5. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Final Fantasy franchise, the publisher also promised details regarding the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake later this year.
