Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4

After his anticipated return as an alternate version of Spider-Man in MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans of Sam Raimi’s version of Spidey are trying to push for Spider-Man 4. The original actor, Toby Maguire, played the titular character and wore the mantle in the trilogy. However, although a fourth movie was initially planned, Sony canceled it later on. His fans even made a Twitter account dedicated to this franchise. Is Spider-Man 4 really happening in the future or all this is just an aspiration?

In a tweet by a fan group called @RaimiHope, we can see a fan-made poster featuring the superhero, MJ, and the villains that were supposed to come out in Spider-Man 4. However, this poster was originally made by ARTOFTIMETRAVEL (via Instagram). The poster features Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) alongside his love interest, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). But, the intriguing parts of the art are the speculated villains and the actors who could play the part. Mysterio is seen portrayed by Bruce Campbell, Anne Hatheway’s Black Cat, and the father-and-daughter duo of John Malkovich as Vulture and Angelina Jolie as Liz Allan. Because of the poster, the fans who have loved Maguire’s portrayal of the character are pushing Marvel to make this happen.

Why was Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 canceled?

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy saw a decline in ratings when it reached the third movie. Spider-Man 1 and 2 were great and became all-time favorites, but the third one didn’t get as much love. Despite that, Sony still agreed to continue with a fourth film which would still feature Tobey Maguire. Obviously, it will still be directed by Raimi himself.

Unfortunately, after a series of conflicts and misunderstandings which lead to Raimi wanting to leave the production, Sony decided to cancel the movie. Years later, a reboot was made. In 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man was conceived, starring Andrew Garfield as the comic character.

But, since Maguire’s Spider-Man has already been introduced to the MCU and Sam Raimi already taking jobs from the same franchise, is a Spider-Man 4 possible?

Despite the rumors, everyone was still surprised after two former Spider-Men appeared in MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). This means that the previous movies are already canon to the current universe.

Spider-Man No Way Home

Meanwhile, Sam Raimi directed Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Given that the Multiverse is already introduced, Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 could still be well underway. Also, Raimi and Maguire have both expressed their desire to return and make the ill-fated fourth installment. That being said, there’s a huge chance we’re going to see them in the future. But, then again, these are just rumors. MCU may have plans for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series and an animated Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse, but an alternate version is still not out of the question.
