The PS5 is the fastest-selling gaming hardware in US history, outselling the PS4’s previous best. The latest PlayStation machine had sold over 6 million units globally by March. To add to their achievements, the PS5 is the “top-selling platform by dollars” of July 2021 according to NPD Group.

  • NPD Group’s July 2021 U.S. video game sales analysis is out, and it shows an overall 10% rise in consumer purchases compared to the same month of 2020. For the month of July, the PS5 led the hardware market in dollar sales, while the Nintendo Switch took the lead in sales volume yet again.
  • July 2021 saw a 98% increase in hardware spending over July 2020, reaching $323 million, the highest monthly number since 2008’s $447 million. Hardware spending in 2021 has so far totaled $2.7 billion, up 50% in comparison.

“Year-to-date hardware spending has increased 50% when compared to the same period in 2020, reaching $2.7 billion,”

Global Shortage

The PS5 just last month achieved a great achievement. Sony announced on the 18th of July, that it had sold 10 million PS5s, 8 months after its launch on November 12th. Between the global epidemic and continuous chip shortfalls, Sony recognized this as a significant achievement. It has now outsold the PS4 by nearly a month, making it Sony’s fastest-selling console to date.

Naturally, under regular industry conditions, the PS5 could be doing even better. Due to a massive global stock shortfall in semiconductors, availability for each model remains to outstrip supply. The console products of Sony aren’t the only devices having trouble; Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa previously cautioned that decreased products on the Nintendo Switch could last longer.
