Stanford’s Captain Katie Meyer Dies At Age 22

March 3, 2022 – Katie Meyer, the captain, and goalkeeper for the Stanford women’s soccer team dies at the very young age of 22.

The school administration did not give any further details regarding Meyer’s death. Furthermore, they are keeping everything in private as they mourn the loss of one of the school’s most beloved student-athlete.

“It is with great sadness that we report that Katie Meyer, a senior majoring in International Relations and minoring in History, a Resident Assistant, and a team captain and goalkeeper on the Stanford Women’s Soccer Team, has passed away,” university officials said in a news release. “Please join us in offering our deepest condolences to her parents and sisters. We would also like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Katie’s friends, hallmates, classmates, teammates, faculty, and coaches.”

Katie was also a senior who is studying majors in International Relations and History.

“Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said ‘changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome’ to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women’s soccer program and to women’s sports in general,” Stanford said in a statement.

Meyer was the captain of the team who helped them push for the championship title back in 2019.

Katie Meyer was a passionate and hard-working woman. Her family, friends, and the school will surely miss her presence.

The 22-year-old athlete was the fourth Stanford student to have died in just over a year.

  • February 2021 – Rose Wong, a medical student put an end to her life while inside the campus
  • August 2021 – Engineering student Jacob Meisel got killed by getting hit by a train in Palo Alto. This was later ruled as a suicide case.
  • January 2022 –  Dylan Simmons (Major in Laws) was found lifeless in an on-campus residence
  • March 2022 – Katie Meyer’s tragic death
