The LEGO Movie

The LEGO Group in collaboration with Warner Animation Group and Animal Logic made a series of films under the LEGO name. These movies make up The LEGO movie franchise.

The first movie released, The LEGO Movie, was a resounding success. First thought to be a cash-grab film, but instead, it defied expectations. It was a movie with a lot of heart. The success of the first movie led to the production of other movies, including the direct sequel.

The following titles are the only LEGO theatrical films: The LEGO Movie (2014), The LEGO Batman Movie (2017), The LEGO Ninjago Movie (2017), and The Movie 2: The Second Part (2019).

Unsurprisingly, the success of this franchise was mainly due to the impressive use of CGI. It used it in a way that made it seem like it was all stop-motion, adding to the nostalgic charm. Some commonly refer to this type of film as a ‘brickfilm’. Stop-motion enthusiasts coined this term to describe those who choose LEGO and other brick-like systems as their choice of medium.

So…LEGO Movie 3?

So that being said, what is known so far about the upcoming 3rd LEGO Movie?

After doing some research and fact-checking, we here at Spiel Times have come to a conclusion about that question. A sad and quite disappointing one at that.

There is no official news or announcement about the 3rd LEGO Movie.

It is highly unlikely for there to be a 3rd LEGO Movie or at the very least, it would not be planned for release any time soon. No credible news regarding release dates, movie plots, and actual trailers have been confirmed by verified sources of news. Most of what we read online didn’t have any basis or was factually wrong.

If you search online, for “LEGO Movie 3“, some links may seem like they have release dates and full-on details of the next big film. Unfortunately, these are mostly hoaxes and idea pitches from fandom-related websites. Some videos, while convincing and of decent quality, are only just fan-made ‘concept’ movies. These are from pre-existing clips and edits that are stitched up together into something resembling a trailer.

Why is it unlikely?

To answer this question, we need to bring attention to some of the things that happened during the production of the last few LEGO movies. Simply put, the last two movies, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, did not do as well as Warner Bros Group had hoped.

Warner Bros. Group Termination

The lukewarm box office reception led to Warner Bros terminating their rights to the LEGO movie franchise. As a result, this would mean the possible sequels to both The LEGO Batman and The LEGO Movie series would be impossible for the time being. The rights to the characters and stories of both are owned by Warner Bros Group and can’t be used by the new owners, Universal Studios.

Memorable characters like the Emmet, Wyldstyle, LEGO Batman, and even any of the LEGO DC Superheroes are now unusable. As of the moment, Universal Studios hasn’t made any announcements yet for the future of the LEGO movie franchise.

Canceled LEGO Movies

Online you’ll be able to find a couple of canceled titles for potential LEGO movies. One was the Billion Brick Race, a supposed spin-off film and potentially a new title for the LEGO Franchise. Originally a death-race-esque story with colorful characters racing across different environments in LEGO vehicles.

The other was a planned sequel to The LEGO Batman Movie, titled LEGO Superfriends. This movie’s plot was supposedly about Batman’s relationship with the Justice League. It was also planned to feature other notable DC characters such as the villain Lex Luthor and OMAC.

Final Thoughts

While the news about a third LEGO Movie floating around on the Internet might not be true as of the posting of this article, it can always change in the future.

For all we know, Universal Studios might already have something cooking up behind the scene for the LEGO franchise. So for now, we here at Spiel Times will keep an eye out for the latest news.
