Courtesy of the New York Times, Josh Wardle, the Wordle’s lone designer, has sold it to the publication for a “low” seven-figure sum. The title will be included in the worldwide newspaper’s website. It is not certain if it will be free in the near and distant future.
The Wordle Craze
It’s safe to say that word games like Wordle are all the rage right now. One-of-a-kind word puzzle game that can only be played once a day with an unusual mechanism to share our score with colleagues, family, and followers on social networking sites.
Wordle was created by software programmer Josh Wardle as a game for him and his spouse to enjoy. In October of 2021, he made it public. When it launched in November, there were just 90 players, but since then it has gone from 300,000 gamers to millions of users per day. He pledged to keep the game free and ad-free when he appeared on the BBC in an interview.

John Wardle claims that the game will still be free. However, it is possible that in the future, a New York Times subscription will be required.
The New York Times and Word Puzzles
The New York Times offers various puzzle games accessible for its subscribers beyond the normal crossword and sudoku puzzles from other media, such as Vertex, Tiles, Letter Boxed, and more. As the article points out, the purchase reflects the increasing relevance of games, such as crossword puzzles, in the company’s goal of increasing digital subscribers to 10 million by 2025.
