“The possibilities are endless”: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis jokes about building state prison next to Disney World

governor Desantis talks about building prison beside disney world

Governor Ron DeSantis joked about building a state prison on land next to Disney World in Florida. The politician recently announced new legislation, that would nullify Disney’s self-governing rights in the state.

In the past, the state granted Disney the ability to operate independently within and around the theme park, which included the freedom to build or renovate as they pleased. However, the new bill will strip the park’s management of that power. Consequently, the land around the park that was previously under the company’s influence will now be directly governed by the state.

During a recent press conference, the politician talked about his plans for that space, he said:

“Come to think of it, now people are like ‘What should we do with this land? People have said, maybe create a state park. Maybe try to do more amusement parks. Someone even said, maybe you need another state prison. Who knows? I just think that the possibilities are endless, and so that is now going to be analyzed to see what is going to make the most sense.”

Many believe, that the new legislation is a form of punishment to the company for openly criticizing the state’s, Parental Rights in Education Act, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill. The law forbids conversations related to gender identity and sexual orientation in certain grades at Florida schools.

DeSantis wants to put Disney World under the same laws as other amusement parks in the state

Disney had a deal with the Reedy Creek Improvement District, that gave it authority to construct, build and take down architecture on its ground. They recently extended the deal for an undisclosed time period. However, DeSantis’ new bill will nullify that agreement. The governor mentioned the agreement between Disney and Reedy Creek and said:

“I’ve worked with both leaders of the House and Senate. There is a bill that will be put out in the Florida legislature that will make sure that the agreements purported to be entered into by Disney are revoked, and the peoples’ will is established and is upheld.”

He also added that the new bill would stop giving Disney an advantage over the other amusement parks in the state, and hold it under the same restrictions and safety criteria as the others parks. He added:

“We want to make sure that Disney lives under the same laws as everybody else.”

He also proposed appraising Disney’s properties at a higher value to make the company pay higher taxes. He said:

“If you’re undervaluing property that means you’re not paying your fair share.”

Disney has yet not made any comment on the new bill. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger had called DeSantis’ ideas “anti-business” and “anti-Florida,” a month ago, when the feud between the two began.
