PS5 stock shortage has become a global problem and scalpers play a big role in it. These are the people/groups who buy the consoles at retail and flip them for profits, sometimes even as high as $1,000. Due to this, ordinary people like us are bound to suffer. One retailer, however, is combating scalpers in a very interesting way.
South Korean game retailer Gamewoori is currently taking pre-orders for the PS5. The console did release on November 12 in the country, however, due to stock shortage, people still have to reserve their PS5s for future shipments.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. If you pre-order the PS5 from Gamewoori and then list it online for a higher price, Gamewoori will identify it and cancel your order immediately. A snippet from their official announcement (via Kotaku) –
Our policy will be to cancel orders without question even if it’s fully paid for in advance if we discover that the person who ordered it is trying to resell it.
Also, if you find an act of reselling, please promptly report it to each store location’s Instagram DM or forum.
Let us all protect our wholesome game culture together.
We’d like to inform you that the canceled units will be allocated towards the next round of pre-order.
Gamewoori will only sell to those who really need an honest price. Thank you.
Gamewoori is asking everyone to cooperate and report scalpers who’re trying to resell the PS5s for a profit. And that’s a great way to fight scalpers. So, how will you identify these scalpers?
Let’s say, you see a listing on a message board. You contact them and they give you a price. Ask for their order proof, and if it’s from Gamewoori, you can simply report it to the retailer, and their order will be canceled.
I hope this is something every retailer could adapt. Retailers like Target are already fighting bots through their in-store pick-up/drive-up options, but that’s not enough. If other retailers come up with better ideas, we’ll report on them too.
