Dark Horse Comics is an American company that publishes comic books and manga. Some of its popular comics include the Umbrella Academy, Hellboy, The Legend of Zelda, The Witcher, and Avatar. Most of these comic series have their counterparts in the form of movies, series, or games.
Dark Horse had been looking at options for potential buyers earlier this month, as reported by Bloomberg. Disney, Netflix, and Viacom were rumored to be potential buyers. However, in the end, it is Embracer Group, the parent company of THQ Nordic and Gearbox, which has acquired the publisher.
The deal was confirmed on the 21st of December. Embracer Group also stated that Dark Horse will be the 10th operative group to join the Embracer Group.
“Through the acquisition, Embracer strengthens its transmedia capabilities by adding expertise in content development, comics publishing, and film & TV production.
Dark Horse owns or controls more than 300 intellectual properties, many of which are attractive for future transmedia exploitation, including the creation of new video games. Dark Horse founder and CEO Mike Richardson will continue to lead the company together with existing management.”

Embracer Group has, however, had a hands-off approach with past mergers. Dark Horse can be expected to retain a relative degree of control in the future. However, what we can expect is more collaborations between Dark Horse and other companies under Embracer Group, such as Gearbox. We can also expect more video game-based comics lining up from Dark Horse.
“I can’t express the excitement I feel as Dark Horse moves into this new chapter in our history. The synergies that exist with the Embracer network of companies promise exciting new opportunities not only for Dark Horse but also for the creators and companies we work with. I’ve had a number of compelling conversations with Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors and I’m very impressed with him and what he and his team have built. I have to say, the future for our company has never looked brighter.”
– Mike Richardson, Dark Horse’s Founder and CEO
