Two Young Ukrainian Footballers Killed Amidst the Ukraine-Russia Crisis

The tension between Ukraine and Russia has already been a worldwide sensation and is getting out of hand. Just a few hours ago, two young Ukrainian Footballers got killed in action during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Vitalii Sapylo, a 21-year-old goalkeeper at third-division side Karpaty Lviv’s youth team decided to join the army ranks. He joined the Ukrainian army as a tank commander but perished at the hands of the Russians while defending Kyiv (Ukraine’s capital city).

Dmytro Martnenko, aged 25, previously played in FC Gostomel’s second division. Dmytro, alongside his mother, suffered a tragic death in the course of the war. It was reported that Russian bombs hit their apartment in Kyiv.

“Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and team-mates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo and Dmytro Martynenko, football’s first reported losses in this war. May they both rest in peace.” – a statement from Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels.

These Ukrainian Footballers were the first footballer casualties in the war. Both of them fought and served their country. Although they died in the war, their death is not in vain. Their respective clubs hailed them as heroes after the tragic incident.

Athletes from Ukraine (as well as other parts of the world) have already condemned this emerging war. Most of them are already planning on taking up arms to protect their home country.

The Military Operation commenced by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has already caused massive damage and many deaths. There have been reports of more than 100 casualties now, and it seems to grow bigger as of late.
