Nicolas Pouard, an executive at Ubisoft, claims that gamers aren’t aware of the advantages of Quartz, the company’s NFT trading platform.

NFT is a technology that Ubisoft has included in its services. It gives the opportunity to link a serial number to virtual goods and save that information in the blockchain. Essentially making it possible to sell licenses between individuals. With regards to environmental impact and speculation, Ubisoft hasn’t been exempt from criticism. It’s even received some of it from within the company itself because of the high environmental costs.

NFTs have been the subject of several public defenses by Ubisoft, the most recent by Nicolas Pouard, vice president of the company’s strategic innovations laboratory. Talking with the Australian media Finder, he said that they had anticipated a negative response from the gaming community because it is a concept that is difficult to grasp.

“Well, it was a reaction we were expecting. I think gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them. The end game is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re finished with them or they’re finished playing the game itself. So, it’s really, for them. It’s really beneficial. But they don’t get it for now.”

Ubisoft Quartz

  • According to Ubisoft, Quartz is the company’s new non-volatile storage system. This was unveiled in December of last year and serves as a platform for selling Digits; the company’s own NFTs (which are currently only available in Ghost Recon Breakpoint).
  • There are a small number of cosmetics and weapons of limited style; each with a unique serial number and a blockchain code that enables proof of ownership to “buy and sell” these tokens.
