Ubisoft Makes An Entry In Blockchain Gaming; Wants To Enable “Play To Earn” Options

Ubisoft recently held its Q2 earnings call, where various things were revealed. Along with its revenue details, we heard some information about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Infinite as well. Another interesting aspect of the event was the announcement that declared Ubisoft’s interests in blockchain technology.

Ubisoft has recently taken interest in Animoca Brands, a blockchain-focused developer. In addition, Ubisoft is also a founding member of the Blockchain Game Alliance. The announcements in the earnings call included many projects of Animoca that were related to blockchain in some way.

The REVV Motorsport from Animoca is one such project, which is basically a system of many games that are related to the “Play to Earn” REVV tokens, a cryptocurrency on its own. Revv Racing and Formula E: High Voltage are some of the games in this system. Another system, the metaverse of The Sandbox similarly has its own SAND token and NFTs.

Apart from investing and partnering with blockchain-related developers, Ubisoft has plans of its own to produce blockchain projects. CEO Guillemot has revealed plans to create blockchain projects on their own, while CFO Duguet has stated that such projects will give players “play to earn” adventures where they can acquire in-game content and actually profit from them. Fans of Ubisoft can be “true stakeholders of its worlds”.

“[Blockchain] will enable more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it’s going to grow the industry quite a lot. We’ve been working with lots of small companies going on blockchain and we’re starting to have a good know-how on how it can impact the industry, and we want to be one of the key players here”

CFO Frederick Duguet

The CFO also believes that Ubisoft’s partnerships with developers such as Animoca are steps to the next stage for Ubisoft and that Ubisoft is going “to be one of the key players here.” This can potentially mean that we might see cryptocurrencies and NFTs in future titles of Ubisoft, but we will have to wait and see. In regard to the environmental impact that blockchain and cryptocurrency actually have, Duguet stated that Ubisoft is learning about such impact.
