The next Assassin’s Creed is allegedly called Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok and it may be a risky maneuver from Ubisoft Montreal.
Assassin’s Creed has become the leakiest franchise in history as almost every entry since Assassin’s Creed Syndicate has leaked in one way or another.
As usual, rumors circulating about the next entry in this long-running stealth, action-adventure, open world, action RPG saga points towards an era of Vikings and a focus on Norse mythology.
We have been hearing this for quite some time now that the next Assassin’s Creed is set in the Viking Era, that it will be a cross-generational title and that it will feature a much bigger open world to explore when compared to the previous entries.
Some of these indications come from Ubisoft themselves via an easter egg in The Division 2, alongside one from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier who has predicted the existence or earlier games in the series.
If recent listings on Reddit is any indication, Assassin’s Creed Ragnorak will start around 845 CE, with the more prominent portion of the story set during 863 CE and center around a character named Jora.(which can be either male or female)
Now everything that this Reddit post has listed out seems believable and painstakingly detailed, which indicates that some if not all of these elements about this next Assassin’s Creed is true. Jason Schreier himself commented that we should not rule out everything from that list.
Considering they are true, it seems as though Ubisoft has been taking notes and paying extra attention to user feedback which is always a good sign.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey may have a taken a leap of faith in the right direction for this series but it doesn’t necessarily do everything right. Ubisoft’s vision to make Assassin’s Creed a full-fledged RPG is long from fulfilled.
The early rumors indicate that we will be playing as a character name Jora ( male or female) and explore the prominent parts of the Northern Europe such as York, London, Paris, and Kiev.
It’s no doubt that this next Assassin’s Creed will be insanely big in size and scope when compared to previous entries which makes it even more prone to several issues such as the level of quality, repetitiveness, etc.
With the next Assassin’s Creed Ubisoft is not just trying to cater to the expectations of the newly formed fans of the role-playing elements but also the fans of the original trilogy that made this series so famous in the first place.
Keeping that in mind, it seems as though Ubisoft is trying to make a perfect blend of both deeply interwoven RPG elements as well as stealth segments in this new title.
The hidden blade seems to be back with this next entry and can be upgraded for one-hit kills like it should be, unlike in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey which disappointed many like me. Moreover, players can also climb trees this time around while hiding themselves in snow, mud, bushes, etc. It seems as though Ubisoft is taking the stealth elements seriously again as this is what defined Assassin’s Creed in the first place.
When it comes to the RPG elements, Ubisoft seems to be enhancing that to much greater extent. The region-locked leveling system seems to have gone and players will be able to freely explore the entirety of the map from the get-go. Moreover improving skills will grant XP this time around ( like in The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim), rather than by completing story missions like in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Origins. A game that is borrowing the appropriate elements from one of the best RPG’s around definitely seems to be headed in the right direction.
The new Assassin’s Creed may not, however, feature naval combat but will allow sailing to explore different places like in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. There’s also a rumor of four-player co-op returning however we should hope that it’s not as game-breaking as it was in Assassin’s Creed Unity.
We still don’t know if any of the information regarding the game we have so far is true or not. But there’s no doubt that this is going to be an insanely ambitious title, what with Ubisoft trying to listen to both its long-time fans, and the ones it has been trying to acquire since its last two entries.
With great power comes great responsibilities and this next Assassin’s Creed may turn out to be a double-edged sword and instead of satisfying the needs of both the fans, it may end up being too ambitious for its own good.
