Upcoming MMORPGs for PC this 2023 – Ranked

The MMORPG genre has been quiet in the past few years. Some interesting titles have released, but none have relived the glory days of WoW, FFXIV, or Guild Wars 2. With that said, some titles bring in home as we enter 2023. Here are some of the upcoming titles to watch out for this coming year:

4. Fractured Veil

Fractured Veil is the latest take on the survival MMORPG genre. Set in Hawaii in a post-apocalyptic future, players must use what resources they have with them to survive. They’ll have to craft, loot, scavenge, and fight for their lives. Not only are they battling against other players, but there are also roaming mutated humans out to kill them.

It’s nothing new and feels like Rust or Ark: Survival Evolved. With that said, these games are usually popular, so we’ll see if it manages to stand out from the crowd.

3. Palia

Have you ever played Stardew Valley and wondered how it would be as an MMORPG? Palia looks to answer this question, creating much anticipation for its release in 2023. The trailer showed off what you’d expect from a game that takes inspiration from games such as Animal Crossing. A character builds a farm, mines resources, and eventually creates a cozy homestead.

But then it deviates by showing other players visiting her and the group going on an adventure together. While they are doing so, many other players are farming, traveling, and having fun. It seems like something that would appealing to the more casual MMORPG crowd. However, the game will have some challenges if it plans to bring some longevity.

2. Blue Protocol

Blue Protocol has been on the radar of many MMORPG gamers for a while now. It had a successful release in Japan in 2022. Bandai Namco finally dips its toes into the genre, partnering with Amazon Games, which is a good sign given the success of New World. The cell-shaded graphics are beautiful, letting players feel like they’re in an anime-style world from the Tales or Ni No Kuni franchise.

The latest trailer at The Game Awards 2022 built much hype for the game. It feels like it’s an anime-style Monster Hunter game, which is never a bad thing. Four classes will be available from the launch, and Bandai iterated that they are aggressively pursuing a path for a global release.

1. Ashes of Creation

Ashes of Creation has been hyped for a long time now, and it seems that it will finally have its release in 2023. The game feels like the most classic MMORPG from the list, as you have large-scale wars, boss raids, guilds, and more. One difference is that it takes elements from modern games as well. The most interesting part is the evolving environment we see in games such as Ark.

In Ashes of Creation, players can start a camp and eventually evolve it into a city. From there, numerous cities can engage in relations leading to wars or alliances. It also feels Black Desert-ish from the gameplay we’ve seen so far, which is a good thing.
