A year ago, Magic: The Gathering announced that they are entering a new era with Universes Beyond. This era introduces all kinds of new content to the beloved tabletop card game, including collaborations with other known video games. The console games that have collabs with Magic: The Gathering for Universes Beyond introduce new card sets to the game. So far, we’ve seen games like Fortnite and Street Fighter have their own themed card sets in Magic: The Gathering.

Games collaborating and having crossovers with each other is not something new. But it is a growing trend among games now, and it’s exciting to see a card game like Magic: The Gathering try its hand at collaborating with other games. Similar to Fortnite, their collaborations are focused on releasing limited-time themed card sets.

Magic: The Gathering latest collabs with console games

Previous collabs in Magic: The Gathering focused on bringing other Hasbro products to the game. Since Hasbro acquired Wizards of the Coast in 1999, they now own Magic: The Gathering. The Hasbro products we’ve seen in the card game are Nerf, Transformers, and Dungeons & Dragons. The game also collaborated with My Little Pony to release a three-card set featuring some of the iconic characters in the animated cartoon series.

As for video games, here are the past and upcoming collaborations in Magic: The Gathering:

These collaborations were revealed last year in Magic: The Gathering’s 2021 Showcase stream. All three of these collaborations are going to be part of the Universes Beyond Secret Lair drops.

Pre-orders for this set began last February 18. Since it was a limited-time card set for Magic: The Gathering, players could only order until March 18, 2022. What makes these cards special is not the art alone; they also have their own gameplay mechanics inspired by the Street Fighter characters. Some of the characters included in this collab with MTG are the following:

  • Guile
  • Ryu
  • Chun-Li
  • Blanka

Fortnite x Magic: The Gathering

For this collaboration, Magic: The Gathering created cards based on Fortnite landmarks and Fortnite-inspired reskins of MTG cards. There were two mini sets available when this Secret Lair drop took place. The other set is called Landmarks and Locations where we see iconic areas in Fortnite have their own cards for MTG. Here are some of the cards that were part of this collab:

  • Battle Bus
  • Shrinking Storm
  • Battle Royale
  • Crack the Vault
  • Shark Island
  • Frenzy Farm

Warhammer 40,000 x MTG

Unlike the previous collaborations we’ve already mentioned, the Warhammer 40,000 x Magic: The Gathering was something most players were excited about. Last month, the official YouTube channel for Magic: The Gathering gave us a behind-the-scenes look at what to expect from this collaboration.

  • This collaboration drops on October 7, so make sure to check in on the official website for more details about the limited-time card sets!
  • It includes four Commander decks available for purchase
  • There will also be three Secret Lair drops for this collaboration

Final Fantasy and Assassin’s Creed upcoming collabs

Quite possibly the biggest collaborations to arrive in Magic: The Gathering after Warhammer 40K are these two titles. Both collaborations were revealed at a presentation during Hasbro’s latest Investor Day. The presentation was headed by Cynthia Williams, the president of Wizards of the Coast.

This collaboration is perfectly timed with Final Fantasy XVI releasing for the PlayStation 5 next year as well as the franchise celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. As for Assassin’s Creed, the franchise is turning 15 in November so it’s quite exciting to see that Ubisoft is bringing some of the game’s most notable characters to Magic: The Gathering.

Aside from announcing that these collabs are actually happening, no further details were released by Williams and Hasbro. They did promise us that these collabs will arrive sometime in 2024.

Based on the crossover with Street Fighter, we can expect characters like Cloud, Ezio, and maybe even Eivor to have their own Commander cards in Magic: The Gathering. Aside from the good guys, we hope to see villains like Sephiroth have their own cards once the collaboration drops.
