A female student, age 15, of Whiteland High School drowned in a swimming pool while doing physical education and died as a result. Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation initially referred to the student’s death as a medical emergency. Later, Johnson County Coroner Michael Pruitt verified to Fox59 that the student had been removed from the Whiteland Community High School swimming pool and died shortly after that.
However, it won’t be until the student’s final medical examination that the precise cause of death will be determined. On the other hand, her family has asked that her name not be revealed. A later date will be announced with details of a memorial service for the 15-year-old student.
Johnson County Coroner Michael Pruitt confirmed the death of this Whiteland High School student
On May 16, 2023, Whiteland High School made the tragic announcement of one of its pupils’ passing. A tragedy occurred Tuesday morning at the Whiteland Community High School (WCHS) in Indiana when a teenager drowned.
The Indiana high school administration revealed the incident occurred during gym class and “despite the efforts of (their) personnel and emergency responders” to help the adolescent, “she passed away” in a follow-up email to parents. They added that “circumstances surrounding her death” are currently being examined. Her name is being withheld at this time at the request of the girl’s family.
As a result of this tragic death, the school decided to remain closed on May 17, 2023. They emphasized that pupils had access to grief counselors and other assistance on both days. The school district also gave a pamphlet with details on how to deal with grief. Moreover, they also provided tools to help the students and their families in managing their feelings.
The WCHS community mourns
This tragic incident saddens families at Clark-Pleasant Community School. They first learned of the unfortunate death through an email issued to parents by the school corporation.

They received the following statement after the incident:
“It is with great sadness that we inform you that a WCHS student has passed away following a medical emergency at the high school this morning. At this time, school and emergency officials are trying to determine exactly what happened.”
In a later press release, the district stated that Whiteland Community High School will be closed on Wednesday. The counselors would be present to assist any students who might require assistance, along with the staff. This is because they must prepare things for the students’ return on May 18.
“Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with Alaina’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. We understand that this news is profoundly upsetting for our entire school community, and we are here to support our students, staff, and families as we grieve together,” the follow-up email writes on a WRTV report.
The WCHS concluded its statement by asking everyone “to keep her and her friends and family in their prayers.” The information on the memorial service will be shared later.
