Who is George Santos + Biography Controversy – Explained

Republican Congressman George Santos may have won the race in the November midterm elections but still has a long and rocky road ahead of him in the landscape of American politics. Arguably, politicians and honesty don’t make the best of pairs, but George Santos seems to have outdone himself with a fabricated campaign biography. Read to find out who George Santos is, and his biography controversy explained.

Campaign biography controversy

The campaign biography of George Santos has led to an absolute shocker of a scandal. The story was always too good to be true – the son of Brazilian immigrants working his way up in Wall Street and then to the White House – sounds like a movie premise, doesn’t it? It doesn’t stop there.

  • George Santos went on to claim that his grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, moved to Belgium, and again fled persecution during World War II, before settling in Brazil. No evidence has been found about Santos’ Jewish roots.
  • Another stunning claim in Santos’ biography says his mother was a financial executive who was inside the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, when the tragedy happened. Santos’ mother was actually a domestic worker and nurse who passed away years later in 2016.

Other claims against Santos

Even basic education and work records seem to be falsified in George Santos’ biography. An elaborate New York Times investigative piece found that Santos did not graduate from Baruch College, nor did he work for Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, contrary to his resume.

  • Santos was never part of any animal rescue charity like he claimed and was even charged with check fraud in Brazil.
  • George Santos was verified to be working in only one financial company named Harbor City Capital which later turned out to be a Ponzi scheme. This is not a good look for an elected Congressman.

George Santos in Congress

Putting aside his biography, George Santos is a Brazilian-origin American politician, part of the Republican Party. He is the US Representative for New York’s 3rd Congressional district.

  • Santos ran for the seat in 2020 unsuccessfully and even refused to accept his defeat. Possibly inspired by former President Donald Trump, George Santos claimed that the voting results were manipulated.
  • The 34-year-old Santos was lauded as the first openly gay Republican to earn a seat in the House of Representatives as a non-incumbent after winning in the November midterms.

 Future in Congress and politics

After the biography controversy, George Santos is being investigated by federal and local prosecutors. Opposition representatives have been calling for his resignation as well as a criminal investigation for conspiracy to defraud the United States government.

  • George Santos’ future in Congress hangs in the balance as even his party members have demanded him to step down, mainly due to his lies about his family’s Holocaust ties.

George Santos has openly admitted to putting a little bit of harmless “fluff” to his resume. However, this could be interpreted as a diversion from the criminal charges against him. Do you think he should resign from Congress?
