Just a day after its official release, the video game adaptation of the beloved wizarding world of Harry Potter, Hogwarts Legacy, is being boycotted by streamers, gamers, and social media. It hasn’t been a week since the game came out but it’s already being plagued with negativity. But, why is Hogwarts Legacy being bombarded by boycotts and controversy?
Twitch streamers are appealing to boycott Hogwarts Legacy amidst the unavoidable Ad Campaign
Probably the biggest game of the year so far, but Hogwarts Legacy is already being pushed out of Twitch. Various gamers and streamers populating the platform have already turned their ads off due to the ongoing Hogwarts Legacy ad campaign. According to them, the campaign interrupts their work in which they have to stop streaming in order for the ad to take place. Since the ad was placed on Saturday, a lot of streamers are furious and are calling for Twitch to end the partnership with the Harry Potter game series.
The Twitch streamer Nikatine (Veronica Ripley) went to Twitter and addressed her appeal for his fellow streamers to boycott the game. However, the ad campaign is not the biggest issue here. It’s actually J.K. Rowling’s previous scandalous tweet that made a lot of people hate her and her works.

J.K. Rowling’s controversy explained
Back in 2020, Harry Potter book series author J.K. Rowling made a buzz on the internet after a controversial tweet.“If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”
Rowling’s following posts were deemed transphobic which resulted in her being canceled by the internet society. Despite it all, Rowling is still strong in her stand although social media is still hating her. She has been in the hot seat for almost three years now and people don’t seem to forget.
Hogwarts Legacy introduces the first transgender video game character
The developers thought that adding a transgender character would lessen the problem, only for it to create more buzz. Although the name is clearly harmless, others think that naming her Sirona Ryan is a “bit too masculine”. Clearly, almost everyone is triggered by almost everything nowadays.
Part of Rowling’s haters believes that by boycotting the game, they also boycott the author herself. Although players are divided, the game is still the biggest release of the year. Plus, with it becoming a trend, it’s even pulling a lot of audiences.
