Up for another sleepless night playing a horror game? We’ve got the stuff for you! Poppy Playtime is a thrilling horror game that would definitely fill a scary night with your friends, family, or–if you’re brave enough–on your own. It was developed by American indie developer MOB Games and released on October 12, 2021.

It is a first-person survival game where players will take the role of a farmer in the Playtime Co. factory, a factory famous for its dolls and toys. As the player, you will receive a letter from a missing staff from 10 years ago.

You will roam around the factory to investigate the mystery behind a missing staff. Around the place are VHS tapes you will gather to figure out what happened. Throughout your search, however, you would be tasked to solve various puzzles while avoiding resentful toys. To make things worse, there is a monstrous toy that desires nothing but to chase and eat you.

The biggest threat

The Huggy Wuggy toy, despite its fluffy name, is your new nightmare. Originally a mascot of the factory, the toy is a huge and horrifying creature with blue fur. He has wide, rep lips with spiky teeth akin to sharks. He also has haunting bulging eyes that feel like staring straight at your soul.

Huggy Wuggy will be chasing you around the factory–appearing out of nowhere to catch you off guard. Try your best to be away from Huggy’s radar. Hide behind closets, and look for keys to open locks. A GrabPack will be useful for you to conduct electricity to grab items that are far away.

He will devour you and, obviously, lose the game. Fortunately, the good news is you get to choose the level of difficulty that best suits you. Ready for the sinister experience yet?

Where to access it?

The first chapter of Poppy Playtime is available on Steam for free. There are also multiple versions found online

None of these versions have age restrictions. Thus, a fair warning to parents if their children stumble upon the game and try it themselves.

New Chapters

MOB Games has also released new chapters of the game. Although the rules stay the same, more characters or toys, and harder puzzles await the player.

Chapter 2

The second chapter of the game featured a new main antagonist named Mommy Long Legs. She stands 12.7cm tall and has wavy arms and legs akin to an octopus.

Chapter 3

A new chapter was also recently announced along with the trailer. It features a mysterious gas mask and will be released on 2023.

Warning signs for kids

An article from Safer Schools NI mentioned that there has been a surge of Huggy Wuggy content that may cause risks for children.

The Dorset Police Cyber Protection Officer warned parents that their children may be viewing this type of content. These include fan-made videos or jump-scare animations that will randomly pop up on platforms like YouTube and TikTok due to the algorithm.

Precisely because of its seemingly “innocent” name, the videos are slipping through safeguarding measures such as filters and age restrictions

The risks of playing horror games

Children are prone to certain risks to their mental health when exposed to horrifying content.

  • Anxiety and stress – Due to the nature of horror games, it could create added anxiety and stress for children. They are at the age where they are still learning to develop and process emotions.
  • Intrusive thoughts – As mentioned, children may develop anxiety that will make them think of frightening images at night. This will cause them to lose focus or be unable to sleep.
  • New fears – The game itself uses toys to frighten the player. This might cause children to be scared of objects they weren’t scared of before.

  • Reassure your child that they are safe. It’s important your child knows they can come and speak to you without fear of judgment. If necessary, ask them to show you the video or game, and follow appropriate reporting procedures if you are concerned.
  • Ask them about the content they are watching online, and if anything they’ve seen has ever made them or their friends upset or scared.
  • Use our Trusted Adult Resources to teach young people about the importance of seeking help if something worries or upset them.
  • If your child is having nightmares or is anxious about something they’ve watched, it’s important to have a conversation about expressing their feelings. You can use our emotions journal to help your child express complex emotions.

Poppy Playtime Verdict: is it good?

Child safety is a significant factor that should be considered when playing this game. Regardless of the enjoyment, it promises, no game is more valuable than their health. The game has previous reports of its dangers, which parents should always consider before playing the game.
