Will Luke Skywalker return to Mandalorian Season 3? Star Wars timeline with Grogu explained

As Din Djarin and Grogu returned in the new Season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian, Star Wars fans can’t help but wonder: will Luke Skywalker make an appearance in the Disney+ series? The Jedi master made a stunning entrance to save the day in the ending moments of the second season finale. The Book of Boba Fett featured another Luke Skywalker cameo in an episode where he trains Grogu AKA Baby Yoda in the Jedi ways.

Fans are now curious whether the character will return in the remaining episodes of The Mandalorian or if showrunner Jon Favreau will retain him for the upcoming Ahsoka series. Favreau has already clarified doubts about how much time Grogu had spent with Luke Skywalker between Season 2’s finale and Season 3’s premiere episode.

Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian Season 3

While Mando and Grogu continue their journey in The Mandalorian, Luke Skywalker is in the process of rebuilding the Jedi Order. In The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu spent time training as a Jedi with Luke and yet decided to be a Mandalorian to reunite with Din Djarin.

Moreover, Luke’s first appearance on The Mandalorian made sense as the whole point of the story was Mando trying to reunite Grogu with other Jedi. Therefore, if Luke returns to the show again, it’ll make Grogu’s decision futile and also undermine the impact of the second season’s finale.

The Book of Boba Fett established the fact that Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano have already met with each other. So, he will most likely make a comeback on the Ahsoka series rather than The Mandalorian’s ongoing season. Ahsoka will also feature Hayden Christensen as the iconic Anakin Skywalker i.e, Luke’s father.

Grogu’s timeline with Luke Skywalker clarified

Jon Favreau first stated that Grogu trained with Luke for two years before being reunited in The Book of Boba Fett. However, he has clarified that it’s more in line with real-time which brings it down to a year’s duration.

This timeline affects Mando as well. After being cast out for taking off his helmet, it’s unlikely that a devout follower of the Mandalorian Creed like Din Djarin would not take any action to repent, for as long as a year.

As Mando already knows that he should cleanse himself in Mandalore, it’s hard to imagine that he would sit around for a year after helping Boba Fett. The lack of clarity in the timeline also messes up the subplot around Bo-Katan, Moff Gideon and the Darksaber.

Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars series

Thanks to digital deaging techniques, 71-year-old Mark Hamill returned to the Star Wars franchise as Luke Skywalker, a role that he first played as far back as 1977 in Episode IV: A New Hope. The veteran actor’s face was digitally restructured, and a body double was used for stunts that are physically daunting.

The bottomline is that Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker might return to either The Mandalorian or Ahsoka or even both series. Nevertheless, another cameo from the iconic character would reignite an already buzzing fandom.
