Woman sues California school district for transitioning daughter from female to male without her knowledge

Aurora Regino parental secrecy policy California school district chico unified male female

A California woman is suing the Chico Unified School District because they helped her 11-year-old daughter to transition from female to male without her knowledge. The school allowed the child to change her identity in class even though she had requested the counselor to inform her mother. The woman, Aurora Regino made this claim during a recent meeting of the Chico Unified School Board.

The school changed Aurora Regino’s daughter’s name and pronouns after the girl expressed feeling like a boy to a guidance counselor. She claims that the Parental Secrecy Policy from California’s Assembly Bill 1226, which provides protections to transgender individuals in schools, prevented her from being told about the discussions.

How did the California school transition Aurora Regino’s daughter’s gender without her knowledge?

Aurora Regino claims that her daughter had been seeing guidance counselor Mandi Robertson at Sierra View Elementary School in early 2022 due to the death of her grandfather. One day, the girl told Robertson that she felt like a boy, and according to Regino, Robertson affirmed her feelings within minutes. The daughter was unsure whether she wanted a male name or pronouns but felt pressured by Robertson to adopt them.

Aurora Regino claims that the school instructed her daughter to come out to other people first before telling her mother. This decision prevented her from knowing. The daughter had a male name at school while still being addressed as female at home. This led to her wanting to change schools.

The lawsuit alleges that the counselor encouraged discussions of sexuality and gender identity between classmates. This included how to cope with feeling like being in a different gender. Eventually, the girl told her grandmother, who informed Aurora, and she immediately contacted the principal of the school.

Aurora Regino’s lawsuit against the Chico Unified School District

The Center for American Liberty filed a lawsuit against the school’s superintendent and board members on behalf of Aurora Regino on Jan. 6. The lawsuit requested the court to declare the school’s actions unconstitutional and order it to stop enforcing such a policy.

During the recent school board meeting, many pro-LGBTQ+ supporters appeared to endorse the district’s policy. At the board meeting, trans activist Squeaky Saint Francis argued in favor of the “parental secrecy” policy. She claimed it is necessary to prevent children from self harm. The Chico school district voted 3-2 to maintain the secrecy policy at the board meeting, siding with the trans activist.

What happened to Aurora Regino’s daughter?

Aurora Regino said that she wanted her daughter to be happy and healthy in whatever identity she chooses. However, she would have requested that her daughter see a mental health professional due to her young age.

She now identifies as female again, and the confusion seems to be brought about by other stresses at the time. For this reason, she now attends private therapy.
