How are you faring on your journey across the realms, warriors? Before it was released, players looked forward to the release of God of War: Ragnarok because of its length which surpasses the previous game in the series. If you want to know where you are in the main story, here’s a complete chapter list for God of War: Ragnarok.

For players who prefer focusing on the main story quests, it would take them an average of 25 hours to complete God of War: Ragnarok. This is because there are a total of 18 main story quests or chapters in the game.

Throughout the 18 chapters in God of War: Ragnarok’s main questline, players will encounter new characters, mechanics, and weapons. Moreover, some side quests can only be unlocked after finishing a certain chapter in God of War: Ragnarok.

Below is a complete list of every chapter in God of War: Ragnarok as well as a brief overview of what happens in each chapter.

1. Surviving Fimbulwinter (Midgard)

This is the first chapter in The Path for God of War: Ragnarok. Here, players are once again introduced to Kratos and Atreus as they are now in Fimbulwinter.

Players also encounter Thor and Odin for the first time in this chapter. After realizing that their protection ward in Midgard is useless, Sindri offers shelter for Kratos and the others at his house. Once they have their bearings, Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir set out for Svartalfheim to look for Tyr.

2. The Quest for Týr (Svartalfheim)

Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir arrive in Svartalfheim in this chapter. However, the Dwarves are not exactly welcoming toward them. They eventually find Durlin who sneakily gives them a map of where Tyr may be.

The map leads them to The Applecore where Tyr has been locked away like a prisoner behind one of the doors. Although Tyr is reluctant to trust Kratos and Atreus at first, he agrees to go back to Sindri’s House with the two.

3. Old Friends (Midgard)

In this chapter, players get to control Atreus’ character. He sneaks out from the Realm Between Realms and travels back to Midgard with Sindri. According to Sindri, the boy would find it helpful to talk to an old friend, Jormungandr.

After the vague conversation with Jormungandr, Atreus finds out from Sindri that another old friend is nearby. In an attempt to get on her good side, Atreus sets out to look for Freya. According to Sindri, she is at the Council of Valkyries.

4. Groa’s Secret (Alfheim)

Kratos and company travel to the realm of Alfheim in this chapter of God of War: Ragnarok. This time, they need to pass through Light and Dark Elves in order to accomplish their goal of reaching the Temple of Light. Tyr also tags along but because of his peaceful nature, he tries to talk to the hostile Elves but to no avail.

Eventually, the party reaches Groa’s Shrine where they discover that Groa misled Odin about Ragnarok. After seeing the prophecy in Groa’s Shrine, they need to make their way back to the Mystic Gateway in order to leave Alfheim.

5. The Lost Sanctuary (Jotunheim)

Players once again take control of Atreus in this chapter. He finds himself in the realm of Jotunheim, also known as the realm of the Giants. He meets a fellow Giant named Angrboda who reveals that she has been waiting for Atreus’/Loki’s arrival.

They explore Ironwood together on the way to the shrines which Angrboda claims will give Loki the answers he needs. Further into their journey, they happen upon Gryla, Angrboda’s grandmother. Together, the two destroy her cauldron to stop her from taking the souls of the animals in the realm.

6. The Reckoning (Vanaheim)

Freya enlists the help of Kratos to help free her from Odin’s curse which doesn’t allow her to leave Midgard. Once they arrive in Vanaheim, they happen upon Freyr’s Camp. Together with his small unit of warriors, Freyr has been defending Vanaheim from the forces that are slowly taking over the realm.

Kratos and Freya travel deeper into Vanaheim until they finally locate where Odin hid the binding curse. The two work together in order to free Freya. In the process, they kill Nidhogg since Odin hid the binding curse in Yggdrasil’s roots. With Freya liberated from her curse, she travels back to Freyr’s Camp with Kratos and has an emotional reunion with her brother.

7. The Runaway (Midgard/Asgard)

In this God of War: Ragnarok chapter, Atreus runs away from Sindri’s House and finds himself back in Midgard. Along the way, he runs into some trouble as the realm is littered with hostile beings that want nothing but to hurt Atreus. He finds Chaurli, the giant tortoise who lives above Freya’s Home in Midgard.

After making sure that Chaurli is warm, Atreus finally accepts Odin’s invitation to travel to Asgard. As soon as he arrives in the realm of the Aesir, one particular god doesn’t take too kindly to him.

8. Into the Fire (Muspelheim)

After finally meeting with the Allfather, Atreus is given the responsibility of retrieving a piece of the broken mask. According to Odin, he only wants to complete the mask and avoid Ragnarok altogether. Now that Atreus is there, he is tasked to travel to Muspelheim with Thor and find one of the mask’s missing pieces.

9. The Word of Fate (Midgard)

Halfway through the main chapters in God of War: Ragnarok, players find themselves in Midgard once again. This time, Kratos and Freya are searching for the Norns to get the answers they need.

10. Forging Destiny (Svartalfheim)

After meeting with the Norns, Kratos was able to make out an answer from their words: Heimdall. When he relays this to the Dwarves back at Sindri’s House, they come up with a way for Kratos to effectively fight against Heimdall.

With the Draupnir in his possession, Kratos travels to Svartalfheim together with Freya, Mimir, and Brok. According to the Dwarves, they need to find The Lady in the Forge who can give them the weapon they need to protect Kratos.

Once they reach the Lady, Kratos receives the Draupnir Spear. However, Brok learns of a bitter truth which Sindri has been hiding from him this entire time.

11. Unleashing Hel (Helheim)

We switch back to Atreus in this chapter for God of War: Ragnarok. Now, he sets out to Helheim with Thrud and Heimdall in tow as they look for the final piece of the mask. Unfortunately, they will be unsucessful in retrieving the final Mask Fragment and to make matters worse, Atreus releases Garm from his chains in Helheim.

The trio return to Asgard and after Heimdall tells Odin about what happened in the realm, Atreus decides that he wants to go back home for now. At Sindri’s House, they take care of the Realm Tear caused by the Hel-hound’s freedom from his shackles.

12. Reunion (Helheim)

With the Hel-hound running loose and causing Tears all across the Realms, Kratos and Atreus need to fix this before it causes more destruction. Although they eventually find Garm, it doesn’t go down without a fight.

In their final encounter with Garm, Atreus takes out his knife to finally end the Hel-hound’s rampage. In the process, he transfers the soul of Fenrir from his knife into Garm’s body.

13. Creatures of Prophecy (Vanaheim)

With Garm taken care of, everyone returns to Vanaheim when they discover that Freyr and the others have been captured by Odin’s forces. Atreus works with Hildisvini while Freya teams up with Kratos to rescue her brother.

As Kratos and Freya journey through Vanaheim in search of Freyr, they encounter Heimdall. Kratos has Freya pursue her brother while he deals with Heimdall, something he was hoping to avoid in order to stop the prophecies from coming true.

Eventually, Kratos deals with Heimdall and they rescue Freyr from the Einherjar. However, the events in this realm might be what sets Ragnarok in motion.

14. Unlocking the Mask (Niflheim)

Now that they have the Gjallarhorn and the upperhand on the Aesir, Atreus decides it’s worth the risk to travel back to Asgard. Here, he promises Odin that he will find the final Mask Fragment. After collecting Thor from the tavern, you go to Niflheim with him.

Atreus does find the final Mask Fragment. However, things get heated at one point and he has no choice but to use Sindri’s emergency device that will take him back to the Realm Between Realms.

15. Hunting for Solace (Midgard)

Nearing the end of the chapters in God of War: Ragnarok, we find ourselves in Midgard again. As a way to deal with the events that transpired at Sindri’s House, Atreus asks that he and Kratos hunt as a form of distraction.

Nevertheless, Kratos decides it is time for them to stop running… and prepare for war.

16. The Summoning (Muspelheim)

As they gear up for the inevitable arrival of Ragnarok, Kratos and Atreus travel to Muspelheim and seek Surtr. Once they find Surtr and convince him that he needs to help fight against Odin and the Aesir.

He brings them to the Spark of the World but Kratos and Atreus are uncertain whether this will work. Nonetheless, they must keep pushing on. Ragnarok is coming.

17. The Realms at War

This might be the longest and content-filled chapter in God of War: Ragnarok seeing as this is the final quest before the Epilogue. Prepare for a few boss fights in this chapter as well as lengthy cutscenes.

Kratos and Atreus return to Midgard and find that they have armies from the different realms backing them up during Ragnarok. To bring Odin down, all must work together and sacrifice what needs to be sacrificed once they arrive at Asgard.

18. Beyond Ragnarok
