How to Play God of War in Chronological Order?

With all the God of War franchise releases throughout these years, you’d probably wonder what’s the order of play for them. Rest assured, you shouldn’t give it a lot of thought, it’s easy to remember. But if you came to the God of War craze recently, just like after the Ragnarok release, we got you. Here’s how you can play God of War in chronological order. Are you ready to explore the world of Nine Realms, its characters, and beyond that — the quests?

Chronological order of God of War

Before anything else, we hope you know that since the first release, the franchise is a Sony exclusive. As of now, we doubt we can see the game franchise going beyond the Sony consoles, but let’s see in the future.

  • The God of War franchise rooted way back in 2005 with its self-titled game, God of War. The first release of the titular game begins the story of Kratos. It launched and can be played on PlayStation 2.

God of War II

  • If you finished the first game, it probably brought your curious mind to the next. God of War II was released two years after the first, in 2007. PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 owners can avail and enjoy the game.

    • Game description: The sequel to the original God of War, in God of War II, Kratos sits atop his Olympus throne as the new God of War, far more ruthless than Ares ever was. Shunned by the other gods for his brutality and haunted by memories of his past, Kratos is struck down by Zeus for refusing to swear loyalty.
  • The developers may have wanted to try a new platform for gaming. The same year as the God of War II, in 2007, God of War: Betrayal dropped. This GoW was the first mobile game of the franchise.
    • Game description: It follows the event of God of War, Kratos leads his Spartan army against Greece. While fighting alongside his warriors, Argos and his beasts attacked Kratos. Hera sent Argo to stop Kratos from waging war.
  • After a year, another God of War installment welcomed fans. The 2008-released God of War: Chains of Olympus became playable for the PlayStation Portable (PSP).
    • Game description: In God of War: Chains of Olympus, the world is plunged into darkness and the gods rendered powerless. As penance for killing those closest to him, Kratos is tasked by Athena to restore Olympus and embarks on a journey that pits him against the most feared creatures of Greek mythology.

God of War III

  • Step into the ‘10s with God of War III. Make use of the 2006-released PlayStation to play the fifth installment of the God of War franchise. Later on, remastering the GoW III happened for the newer console, Sony PlayStation 4.

    • Game description: Facing impossible odds and an elaborate plot, Kratos must rise from the darkest depths of Hades to scale the heights of Mt. Olympus. Armed with double-chained blades and a new array of weapons and magic, Kratos faces off against fearsome monsters of myth and gargantuan Titans on his path to bring down Zeus, King of the Gods.

Ghost of Sparta

  • Another one of the goodies for the PSP players came way back in 2010. God of War: Ghost of Sparta dropped as the second available game for the said platform.
    • Game description: God of War: Ghost of Sparta is set after the events of the original PlayStation 2 game,  revealing the previously unknown struggles and history of Kratos as he challenges the deities of Olympus, eventually taking the status and title of god for himself.
  • The franchise rested for a good three years before releasing another game. God of War: Ascension in 2013 allows PlayStation 3 console owners to play the game.

    • Game description: God of War: Ascension serves as another prequel to the series, taking place ten years before the events of the original God of War. Shortly after Kratos was tricked by Ares into slaying his family, he swears to avenge them and renounces his blood oath to serve the God of War.
  • After a few more years of waiting, the GoW franchise released a game on a new platform once again. Launched on the social media application, Facebook, God of War: A Call from the Wilds came in 2018. Additionally, this release ties the game to the 2018 GoW.
    • Game description: A text-based game launched on Facebook that explores the Norse wilds as Atreus on his first adventure.
    • Game description: Bring God of War’s world into yours with the Mimir’s Vision app an AR experience that reveals the legends of Midgard.

God of War (2018)

  • God of War drops another self-titled game of the franchise again in 2018. Grab your PlayStation 4 to enjoy the game. Just this year, a PC version came out so might as well try it!
    • Game description: Living as a man outside the shadow of the gods, Kratos must adapt to unfamiliar lands, unexpected threats, and a second chance at being a father. Together with his son Atreus, the pair will venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to fulfill a deeply personal quest.

God of War: Ragnarok

  • Lastly, the recently released and acclaimed God of War Ragnarok dropped this 2022. To continue the story of Kratos and Atreus, you can play the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, respectively.
    • Game description: Kratos and Atreus must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of answers as they prepare for the prophesied battle that will end the world.

This should be everything you need to know about God of War’s chronological order. How about another journey of Kratos and Atreus, what do you say?
