Pigs in Minecraft are one of the passive mobs players can encounter. Players can also use them as resources for food. But more than that, tamed pigs can give you an unlimited supply of pork chops. In this guide, we will walk you through how to properly tame and breed a pig in Minecraft.

Before you can breed a pig, you need to tame them first

Taming in Minecraft is actually easy. First, you need to look for pigs in the game’s vast open world. They are usually found in grassy areas during the day and spawn in groups of two to four. However, pigs are not found in areas like the Badlands plateau. Pigs are also found in villages where they are locked in pig pens.

After you find pigs you want to tame, make sure to build its pen first so you won’t find the next steps difficult. Use wooden fences and gates for your pig pens since they can’t jump over these structures.

Then, make sure you have a carrot in your inventory. This is to lure pigs into the animal pen you created. If you don’t have carrots yet, you can get some from village garden plots.

Equip the carrot in your inventory and go near the pig you want to capture. Wait until it starts following you. Then, you can now start leading the pig to the animal pen using the carrot.

Once you get the pig in your enclosure, close the gate and repeat the process to capture another pig.

Alternative ways to find pigs

If you’re having trouble looking for pigs to tame, there are two easier ways to summon them. First, you can use a cheat to summon a pig in your world. Here is the summon command for pigs in Minecraft.

Summon Code Game Version
/summon pig [pos] [nbt] Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17 and 1.18
/summon Pig [x] [y] [z] [dataTag] Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.8, 1.9 and 1.10

The ‘[pos]’ and  ‘[x y z]’ are coordinates for where the pig will spawn. This is completely optional and if there are no coordinates typed in, the pig will spawn at your location. Additionally, [pos] and [dataTag] is only used to set a property number for the pigs. Like with the coordinates, this is optional.

How to breed a pig in Minecraft

After you have two pigs in your enclosure, you can now start breeding pigs in Minecraft. The process is quite simple and all you’ll need is food to give to your tamed pigs. To feed pigs, you can use whichever of the following: carrots, potatoes, and/or beetroots.

Once you feed the pigs, hearts will appear over their heads. This indicates that the pigs are entering love mode. After feeding both pigs, wait for them to turn to each other with the red hearts still there. Wait for a few more seconds until the hearts disappear.

Then, a baby piglet will be standing with the two adult pigs. You can repeat this process as much as you want. However, you will have to wait five minutes until you can start the breeding process again.

As for the baby pig growing into an adult, it will take one in-game day for it to mature. This is approximately 20 minutes in real-time.

Players can ride pigs like horses in Minecraft

After taming a pig, players can ride them like horses to get around the vast open world. But this is rather difficult to do since you’ll need a saddle. This item cannot be crafted and can only be obtained from chests inside dungeons or the Nether Fortresses.

Moreover, you will also need to use a carrot attached to a fishing rod to make your pink steed get you places. But this is particularly easy to do since all you need is to craft a fishing rod and carrot together. The difficult part is obtaining the saddle.
