Valheim Workbench Upgrades – Top 10 Must Try

Upgrades to your Valheim Workbench are essential for improving your equipment and creating new items. It’s worth it to upgrade your crafting stations, whether you’re using stone or metal tools.

Valheim is a dangerous place, so you’ll need to make some tough gear to stay alive. At the start of the game, you can make some basic hand tools, but you’ll soon be working on a Workbench, your first home, and a much more advanced set of tools.

As time passes, you may find yourself in a situation where you are unable to upgrade a weapon or armor due to a low Workbench level. This guide will walk you through all of the Valheim Workbench upgrades and how to get them!

How Do Upgrades Work?

Before we get started, keep in mind that new crafting recipes can only be unlocked after you’ve collected all of the required components. If you don’t see one of these items on your list, you haven’t yet gathered all of the materials you’ll need to complete the project.

Upgrades can’t just be thrown in anywhere; they all have to be built close enough to the crafting station they’re upgrading, and some of them have specific spacing requirements. Make sure you have enough room around your crafting stations to accommodate all of these upgrades; you can use the images to estimate how much space you’ll require.

CHOPPING BLOCK

  • Requirements:
    • Workbench
    • 10x Wood
    • 10x Flint
  • This is most likely the first (and cheapest) Workbench upgrade you’ll make.

SMELTER

  • Requirements:
    • Workbench
    • 20x Stone
    • 5x Surtling Core
  • Metal ore is smelted into metal bars in the smelter. You’ll be able to make metal tools, weapons, and armor by constructing this crafting station!

COOKING STATION

  • Requirements:
    • 2x Wood
  • The Cooking Station isn’t technically one of the Valheim Workbench upgrades. It must, however, be used over a campfire to function. Raw Meat, Neck Tails, Raw Fish (assuming you have a Fishing Pole to catch them), and Lox Meat can all be cooked at this crafting station.

TANNING RACK

  • Requirements:
    • Workbench
    • 10x Wood
    • 15x Flint
    • 20x Leather Scraps
    • 5x Deer Hide
  • The Tanning Rack requires you to obtain Leather Scraps by killing Boar and Deer Hide by killing Deer; the latter will be more difficult since you must kill Deer with either a spear or a bow and arrow.

ADZE

  • Requirements:
    • Workbench
    • 10x Fine Wood
    • 3x Bronze
  • The Adze is the first metal-required Valheim Workbench upgrade; you won’t be able to construct it until you’ve visited the Black Forest and started producing Copper, Tin, and Bronze.

BEEHIVE

  • Requirements:
    • Workbench
    • 10 Wood
    • 1 Queen Bee
  • In the early game, the Beehive provides you with Honey, which is a good, renewable source of food. Honey is also used in the production of mead and potions. You will, however, need to locate a Queen Bee to construct it.

TOOL SHELF

  • Requirements:
    • Workbench
    • 4x Iron
    • 10x Fine Wood
    • 4x Obsidian
  • This is the most difficult Workbench upgrade to obtain because it requires Obsidian, a resource found only in the Mountain biome. Iron, a metal found only in the Swamp biome, is also required.

SPINNING WHEEL

  • Requirements:
    • Artisan Table
    • 20x Fine Wood
    • 10x Iron Nails
    • 5x Leather Scraps
  • The Spinning Wheel converts Flax into Linen Thread, which is used to make higher-end light armor as well as some Blackmetal weapons and tools.

WINDMILL

  • Requirements:
    • Artisan Table
    • 20x Stone
    • 30x Wood
    • 30x Iron Nails
  • The purpose of the Windmill is to grind barley into flour. In turn, barley flour can be used in four high-end cooking recipes.

FERMENTER

  • Requirements:
    • Forge
    • 20x Fine Wood
    • 5x Bronze
    • 10x Resin
  • Making Meads and Potions requires the use of a Fermenter. You’ll probably want to make more than one because making these delicious drinks takes some time!
