If you are reading this article, then hats off to you mate. Obviously, you are one of the people who still haven’t figured out what Gen Z’s have made – a new wave of slang on Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. There seems to be a set of new words, and boomers, gen X, as well as Millenials are having a hard time keeping up. The most common social media slangs nowadays are imy, asf, afaik, and iykyk. And, if you’re someone who likes to spend time on the internet, then you probably have read these somewhere. If you are wondering what these abbreviations mean, then we got you covered!

The first one here is actually pretty easy. We’ve used the slang IMY for many years now. Truly, it’s one of the most overused slang like ILY (I Love You) and FYI (For Your Information).

Almost everywhere, IMY stands for I Miss You. There’s not much explaining to do since you probably knew about this one.

You’re probably not shocked. ASF is just short for As F*ck, which is kind of an expression of exaggeration. Actually, ASF isn’t new anymore. Everyone must have read or heard about this somewhere. Remember the “High as F*ck” phrase? Well, that could be where this started.

Honestly, it’s just an exciting way of exaggerating things instead of putting “very”, “really”, or “extremely”. Well, ASF does make a better sentence on chats, doesn’t it?

Now we’re getting to the harder part. Even I, myself, had to search this one thoroughly. TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram are relatively new to us. Although it’s been around for years, it boomed during the pandemic. As expected a lot of the younger generations would pick it up and then make it their own thing. One shortcut the new generation managed to create is AFAIK.

Basically, AFAIK is just short for “As Far As I Know”. It can be used how you want it, but sometimes, kids use it the wrong way. As Far As I know, then you add something you’ve learned or a fact you heard from someone. It’s basic English honestly. Although we could say that we’re getting lazier and lazier by the day.

If AFAIK had you shivering, wait until you read teenagers type IYKYK on their messages. IYKYK is slang for “If You Know, You Know”, which is an indicator for an inside joke. Not only that but it can be used as a reference (such as a movie, photo, or meme). But, it’s only applicable to say IYKYK following an inside joke to a group of people who know about it, because it wouldn’t make much sense if it’s common knowledge. Like, everyone knows about it already, so why bother?

Fun fact: Would you believe that these slang words aren’t just used for text messages and online posts? Actually, these abbreviations are already included in the dictionary. Don’t believe me, try looking it up and be amazed.
