Genya Shinazugawa was one of seven siblings in his family, with Sanemi being the eldest.

  • His mother was a hardworking woman who was unusually meek and tiny. Genya mentioned that he had never seen her sleeping or resting.
  • However, his father was a big strong man who used to take advantage of his mother’s weakness and assaulted her and the kids every day. The entire family heaved a breath of relief when he was stabbed to death by someone who held a grudge against him due to his erratic behavior.

One day all seven siblings were trying to sleep as they waited for their mother to come home. Genya and Sanemi were worried as it was too late at night for their mother to be out. Worried, Sanemi went out to search for her. He trusted Genya with the responsibility of looking after the other siblings.

A tragic event occurs

Amidst waiting for Sanemi to return, Genya and the other siblings heard a sound at their door. All the other siblings barring Genya ran towards the door expecting that that mother has returned. However, as they approached the door, they were mercilessly killed by a demon who was too fast due to their small size. The demon jumped out of the window after killing the siblings, leaving Genya in immense despair. He was terror-stricken at the sight of his dead siblings. Moreover, he ran out to find a doctor as he could not accept their death.

  • While he was running at his best, he saw his brother, Sanemi, covered in blood with a cleaver in his hand at a distance. Genya lost all his senses as he saw the lifeless body of his mother lying in front of him, covered in blood. He blamed Sanemi for her death and called him a murderer as he could not comprehend his brother’s deed. He traveled and went out of the village with Sanemi after that.
  • Later he realized that all his siblings were killed by none other than their mother who was mysteriously turned into a demon. Sanemi killed her before she could harm any other human being. Hence he admires him to this day and aims to be a Hashira like him, as he feels that that is when he will be worthy enough to face him again and apologize. At the brink of death, Genya regretted everything, until Tanjiro jumped in and saved him. Now fans wonder if he will be able to face his brother and confront everything in the future.

Conclusion

This was everything you had to know about Genya and Sanemi’s backstory in Demon Slayer Season 3. Their backstory shows us the meaning of true respect and love among siblings. The beautiful story of brotherhood has one of the biggest ironies in the story, as they are the only siblings who do not talk to each other at this moment in the series. That is nothing short of beautiful writing.
