The mysterious swordsman in Tanjiro’s memories has made an appearance in the anime numerous times. First appeared in Season 2, Yoriichi Tsukiguni is the man in Tanjiro’s memories. He is the progenitor of the breathing styles that the members of the Demon Slayer Corps members use today. That is not all he was also regarded as the strongest demon slayer in history as he was the only man who overpowered Muzan without any effort.

Yoriichi Tsukiguni will play a significant role in the upcoming arcs as the story is heading toward the final showdown quite steadily. He was the only user of Sun Breathing, the first breathing style ever created. Therefore, it is a given that he is a prime character in the story as he still haunts Muzan even though he has been long dead.

What is Yoriichi’s relation to Tanjiro?

When he first appeared in Demon Slayer Season 3, many people mistook him for Tanjiro’s father. However, after learning about the fact that Yoriichi existed in the Sengoku Era, people have now settled upon him being a forefather of Tanjiro. After all, Tanjiro has “inherited memories” of him.

However, both of these notions are equally untrue as Yoriichi and Tanjiro are not biologically related. Yoriichi could not have a kid as both his wife and his kid were killed by a demon. However, he was a very close friend of Sumiyoshi, who was in fact a forefather of Tanjiro. Prior to his retirement and sudden disappearance, Yoriichi let Sumiyoshi have his hanafuda earrings that Tanjiro wears in the anime. Moreover, Sumiyoshi learned the Hinokami Kagura through his Sun Breathing and has passed it down to generations in the Kamado family. This is how Yoriichi and Tanjiro are related to each other. Later in the series, Tanjiro will be the second person ever to use the Sun Breathing as he will unlock his full potential.
