  • The first film adapted the source material to an attractive tilt. Edward and Alphonse Elric who lost their mother due to illness try their hands at human transmutation in an attempt to bring her back.
  • Yet what is brought back is a zombie-like corpse and what is lost is an arm and Alphonse’s entire body. The law of equivalent exchange dictates for everything something of equivalent value must be given.
  • Edward then sets up to be the state alchemist, to earn ways of reviving his brother’s body. The film introduces Roy Mustang, along with a great line-up of original characters as support and also the adversary homunculus.
  • The first live-action ends with Edward finding the philosopher’s stone which he uses to meet Alphonse’s body and promises to find a way back to him without the expanse of the stone.

Concluding

Fullmetal Alchemist live-action is no small feat of story work. It’s a work of fiction that has been ranked no 1 in one of the world’s largest anime and manga databases, myanimelist. To remain uncontested no 1 must mean there’s a huge following, even larger than that of Attack on Titan or Death Note, that sees to it that their ranked 1 retains its status quo. The recent frenzy for live-action adaptations has become wide and spread. With such changing tides, anime fans prepare themselves for an upsurge of more live-action films.
