In my list of Top 5 Cyberpunk mangas, I introduce to you Desertpunk. The adaptation of technology to super harsh desert environments.

The aesthetic of desertpunk is a bit grungy, with cobbled-together technology taken from whatever comes before the apocalypse.

  • Trigun was probably the first big one, at least as far as anime goes. Though it’s also a very good trope example and justifies the setting very well.
  • They were going to terraform the planet (or even just find a better one), but the Big Bad tried to kill everyone and screwed it up.

2. Dieselpunk

A retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction similar to steampunk or cyberpunk that combines the aesthetics of diesel-based technology.

  • The interwar period through to the 1950s with retro-futuristic technology and postmodern sensibilities.
  • Imagines World War I, World War II, and the inter-war period, and takes that technology and industrial aesthetic to an extreme level.

Some of the Studio Ghibli films like Howl’s Moving Castle, take place in a mythical Diesel Deco-style Europe.

Also known as coalpunk, a subset of Dieselpunk.

Seeker and shinier, centered around art deco and Streamline Modern art styles.

  • Adopts the gaudy style of Art Deco to its technology. The Witch and the Beast is one of the few rare mangas that utilizes Art Deco as an aesthetic. As the world and technology seem to be based somewhere in the 1910s- 1920s.
  • As such, the architecture is similar to the world during World War I, where Art Nouveau was being transitioned into Art Deco.

4. Dungeon Punk

A subgenre of Aetherpunk (can be found in part 1)

Might be considered cynical Aetherpunk. It takes the idea of magical technology, makes it grittier, and mixes in heroic fantasy, sword, and sorcery tropes.

  • It applies the gritty tone of Cyberpunk and Steampunk to a Heroic Fantasy setting. Some use the term interchangeably with Arcanepunk and Magepunk.
  • Dorohedoro is part of this, past Urban Fantasy, due to the fact that while not greatly advanced, fits the Cyberpunk aesthetic, and the magic part goes without saying.

5. Elfpunk

A proposed fantasy fiction derivative.

A subgenre of urban fantasy in which traditional mythological creatures, such as faeries and elves. It transplants from rural folklore into modern urban settings.

  • In Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri, a mysterious portal in the shape of a large gate suddenly appears.
  • From this gate, supernatural creatures and warriors emerge, charging through the city. Elves and such characters crossed over to modern Japan.

Other proposed derivatives

  • Cattlepunk: Steampunk in the American West.
  • Bronzepunk (Bronze Age Tech) /Sandalpunk:

-Classical period or the ancient world before Middle Ages. Sandalpunk and Bronzepunk are competing terms for the same thing.

-Taking the technology of the ancient classic world (the time of Plato and Aristotle) and building a retrofuturistic civilization with it.

  • Biblepunk: Combines Stonepunk and Sandalpunk within an Egyptian or Middle Eastern setting.
  • Ironpunk: (Iron-Age tech) like Bronzepunk.
