The final episode of the Entertainment District arc gave fans a sneak peek of what’s to come, as Akaza was summoned to the Infinity Castle. The Upper Moon Three demon realized that the summons meant that an Upper Moon demon was killed. Season 3 Episode 1 picked up where the previous season left off, revealing the remaining Upper Moon demons. Hantengu and Gokko, Upper Moons Three and Four, respectively, skulked around, while Doma began provoking Akaza.

A furious Muzan asked why the demons had failed to find either the whereabouts of Kagaya Ubuyashiki, or the blue spider lily. Gyokko attempted to gain the Demon Lord’s favor by stating that he had a new lead, but Muzan ordered him to take Hantengu with him and verify the information before relaying it to him. Doma and Akaza had an altercation and the former patronized him. Upper Moon One, Kokushibo, clearly irritated by Doma, intervened and asked Akaza to defeat them if he was unhappy with the current hierarchy.

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 1 then moved on to show Tanjiro’s current situation. While Zenitsu recovered first and had already been dispatched to a different mission, both Inosuke and Tanjiro remained unconscious for almost two months. Inosuke was soon sent on a mission as well, while Tanjiro wondered when his sword would be fixed. However, upon getting an angry response from Haganezuka, Shinobu’s apprentices suggested that Tanjiro visit the Swordsmith Village himself.

Season 3 Episode 1 then showed the young demon slayer traveling to the hidden village, where the chief assured him that his sword would be fixed. Tanjiro first encountered the Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji, and then met Genya Shinazugawa, Sanemi’s brother. The episode ended with Tanjiro eavesdropping upon the Wind Hashira Muichiro Tokito in the forest, who asked a young boy of the village for a key. The boy refused, but Tanjiro’s attention shifted to the person standing behind the child, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Yoriichi Tsugikuni.

How Twitter fans reacted

Demon Slayer fans were overjoyed with Ufotable Studio maintaining the stunning animation which is characteristic of the anime. Many were especially impressed with the depiction of the Infinity Castle, followed by the intense interaction between the Upper Moon demons. Fans could not contain their excitement upon realizing that Kokushibo is being voiced by Ryotaro Okiayu, the voice actor for Blyakuya Kukichi from Bleach

Although Doma had appeared in the final episode of the Entertainment arc as well, his interaction with Akaza reminded fans why Mamoru Miyano is the perfect casting choice for the Upper Moon Two demon. The appearance of the two Hashiras delighted fans as well, although for very different reasons.

Several Twitter users’ reactions to Mitsuri’s first look in the anime confirmed that Demon Slayer does fanservice very well. Yet others were simply happy that the much-awaited anime was finally back, and have already begun anticipating the events of the upcoming Season 3 Episode 2. Fans were also excited to watch the opening of the new season, convinced that the latest arc would be a masterpiece.

Final thoughts

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 1 initially premiered in theaters all over the world, as part of the To the Swordsmith Village movie, featuring the two last episodes from the previous season, followed by the hour long episode of the current arc. Fans are already hyped for the next episode, hoping for more information to be revealed about Muichiro’s presence in the village and the mysterious figure resembling Yoriichi.
