Suzume no Tojimari Makoto Shinkai

The Twitter handle of the renowned director Makoto Shinkai revealed yesterday that all the production for his first film in the last three years is all set for release. Suzume no Tojimari will find its short premiere Japan’s NTV channel. NTV will air the first 12 minutes of the film along with a television revision of the Your Name feature film.

Running for about 2 hours, the feature film will premiere on November 11th, 2022. Returning with Shinkai will be the band that found its epic fame following Your Name and Weathering With You’s success, RADWIMPS. We had previously talked about if we can see snippets of Makoto’s previous films return as a cameo in his latest rendition here.

What is Suzume No Tojimari all about?

Suzume no Tojimari translates literally to Suzume’s Door Locking or Suzume’s Locking Up. But the official international title is instead simply Suzume.

  • The film will tell the story of Suzume who is a 17-year-old high school girl living in a town in Kyushu Prefecture of Japan.
  • From what we can derive from the trailer, Suzume will meet the other protagonist who seems to be an older man who comes looking for a door.
  • The two will find an unusual door in what seems to be a terribly run-down disaster-struck building. Often when you find such a door you can only imagine Doraemon’s anywhere door. There’s no way a door that’s just standing with nothing behind it is in any way sane.

After Suzume interacts with the door, the world is veiled by what is termed Doors of Disasters appearing all around Japan. The guy whom she was with also magically turns into a 1 feet tall door with cute legs and a magical cat appears out of nowhere. The film tells Suzume as she goes along her journey of closing all the doors in an attempt to stop the invading disasters.

Suzume no Tojimari wraps up productions

Shinkai’s tweet read a gratuitous overtone.

“Suzume no Tojimari” has been completed! Thank you very much to everyone who did their best and supported us.” said Makoto Shinkai, “It should be a movie that you will surely enjoy. I hope you can watch it a lot!”

Concluding

In Makoto Shinkai’s remarks about the film, the creator noted that the film feels like a road movie spanning across the entirety of Japan. A story of ‘closing doors’ that metaphorically resembles the tying of loose ends or wrapping of an important thing.

Makoto Shinkai usually releases a novel of the film prior to its release – a ritual he has maintained even now. A manga based on the film will launch in Kodansha’s Monthy Afternoon magazine starting tomorrow, October 25. The manga will be adapted by Denki Amashima.
