“My ex is trying to have me canceled”: Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland releases first statement on domestic battery case

Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland has released his first public statement on the domestic battery case that resulted in his termination from the show. Prosecutors have dropped the charges pressed against him after several months of legal proceedings.

According to the Orange County court’s spokesperson, the charges against him were dismissed today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Rick and Morty creator and voice actor immediately took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the court’s decision. The case began in 2020 when Justin Roiland was arrested and charged with felony domestic battery and false imprisonment. Details of his arrest and release with bail went public only a few months ago after he was fired by Adult Swim.

Furthermore, a lot of people came forward with allegations of abuse against Justin Roiland. This included predatory behavior towards minors.

Justin Roiland’s public statement after prosecutors drop domestic violence charges

In his statement, Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland spoke about how he was relieved after the case was dismissed and yet “shaken by the lies” during the process. He expressed his disappointment on how quick people were to judge him.

Roiland specifically hit out at his ex-girlfriend who, according to him, has attempted to bypass legal proceedings and tried to get him canceled by the public. The 43-year-old animator aims to restore his good name and get back to work on his creative projects.

The animator’s statement has drawn in a lot of mixed reactions from Twitter. Some of them are in favor, claiming that justice has prevailed and cancel culture has lost. Others believe the opposite and still believe that Roiland is a “problematic creep.”

Will Justin Roiland return to Rick and Morty and other projects?

Now that the charges have been dropped, Justin Roiland may be looking forward to returning to Rick and Morty and other projects he was fired from. However, despite the court clearing his name, it will be difficult for him to regain public favor as well as studio approval.

His text interactions with comedy musician Allie Goertz revealed how inappropriate his approach was. It was after this incident that Adult Swim announced it would recast his voice roles in Rick and Morty.

Soon afterwards, 20th Television Animation followed suit and fired Justin Roiland from Solar Opposites and Koala Man. All these shows will continue with or without his presence.

How did Justin Roiland become famous?

Justin Roiland started his career in the entertainment industry as a voice actor in animated series such as Fish Hooks, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls. In 2012, he co-created the animated web series House of Cosbys. The show gained popularity online and eventually led to the creation of Rick and Morty.
