The Last of Us TV Series – Trailer Breakdown

The official trailer has dropped for the TV adaptation of The Last of Us by HBO Max. The trailer for the PlayStation classic video game premiered at the buzzing Brazil Comic Con this weekend.

The Last of Us fans are more than impressed with the adaptation. But what’s more important is that the trailer has clicked with even audience members unfamiliar with the game. Check it out here:

Stars of The Last of Us

The trailer comes after the much-hyped release of the character posters earlier which received a highly positive public reaction, mainly thanks to the casting choices. The cast for the series is stacked with TV A-listers.

  • The lead character Joel is portrayed by Pedro Pascal who has starred in some of TV’s biggest shows like Game of Thrones, Narcos, and The Mandalorian
  • His fellow Game of Thrones starlet Bella Ramsey plays the central character Ellie.

Official Synopsis

It is understood from the trailer, teaser, and posters that the first season of the show revolves around the events of the first game. The official HBO Max synopsis reads:

  • “The live-action series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across a post-pandemic America.”

Talking points from The Last of Us trailer

The Last of Us trailer shows the journey of Joel and Ellie as they embark on an adventure in a post-apocalyptic America after a mutant fungus turns humans into zombies.

  • The trailer is more detailed than the previous teaser as we get a quick look at a terrifying Bloater (a fungus-affected zombie villain from the games) emerging from a pit.

  • Ellie is immune to the mutant fungus and she even pranks Joel by pretending as if she’s affected in the trailer. We can expect the series to have similar light-hearted moments sprinkled throughout all episodes.

The Last of Us supporting cast

Apart from Pascal and Ramsey, the supporting cast is also pretty solid. Storm Reid plays Ellie’s old friend Riley which means the first season features a sad backstory from the first game’s DLC.

  • An interesting casting choice is Ashley Johnson for Ellie’s mother. Johnson voiced Ellie in the original game. Troy Baker, the original voice actor for Joel, has also been added to the cast.
  • Nick Offerman, best known as Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation, briefly appears in the trailer. Other cast members include Gabriel Luna, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, and Con O’Neill.

Release and Hype

The Last of Us showrunners are Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and original game writer Neil Druckmann. The first episode is all set to premiere on January 15th, 2023.

  • The Last of Us changed the landscape of the video game industry when it was released. Everything about the game itself was cinematic even back then. So, it only made sense that a screen adaptation was on the cards.

  • Sony’s The Last of Us film adaptation ended up being just an announcement back in 2014. Will the HBO Max adaptation of The Last of Us do justice to the legendary game?
