The Emperor presents players with a difficult choice in Act 3 that has serious consequences. Baldur’s Gate 3 features a major decision point when you meet the mysterious Emperor on the Astral Plane. If you choose to help the Emperor in combat, you’ll gain some significant benefits:
- You get an Astral-Touched Tadpole that unlocks powerful Illithid abilities

- You can continue playing the game’s storyline
By aiding the Emperor, you have to fight against the Githyanki forces in the area. The Emperor and Intellect Devourers will fight by your side against the four Githyanki warriors. After their defeat, the Emperor will gift you with the Astral-Touched Tadpole as a reward. This tadpole allows you to develop incredibly strong psionic powers, at the cost of becoming a half-Illithid hybrid. However, you can choose to reject the tadpole’s power for now if desired. Gaining the Emperor’s favor is also pivotal, as he plays a larger role in the story that is revealed later.
What Happens If You Attack the Emperor
On the other hand, if you attack the Emperor, the consequences are severe:
- The game will end after the battle
- A Mindflayer bursts from your character’s body.
Attacking the Emperor leads to a quick end to your playthrough. You’ll have to face the Emperor, an Intellect Devourer, and the Githyanki forces. Even if you manage to defeat them all, your victory is short-lived. A cutscene will play showing a Mindflayer violently emerging from your character’s body, signifying the abrupt end of your journey. Unless you want to finish the game now, avoid this choice.
Why You Should Help the Emperor in Baldur’s Gate 3
When it comes down to it, helping the Emperor allows you to continue the adventure and unlocks additional power. Here’s why you should aid him:
- The Emperor has been guiding you throughout the journey
- He protects you from the tadpole by stopping its activity
- You can access extremely strong Illithid abilities with his help
- Helping the Emperor lets you experience the full story
Even if the Emperor seems like an enemy at first, he is actually your ally against the darker forces at play. To get the most out of Baldur’s Gate 3, you should help the Emperor when you meet him in Act 3.
