NBA: Where is DeMarcus Cousins?

Where is DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins, once considered one of the most dominant big men in the NBA in his prime, has had a tumultuous career filled with injuries, controversy, and missed opportunities. After his short stint with the Nuggets in 2022, Cousins found himself without a team and with uncertainty about his future in the league. With his talent and undeniable basketball prowess, many NBA fans are left wondering: where is DeMarcus Cousins, and what’s next for the 4-time NBA All-Star? In this article, we’ll explore Cousins’ journey in the NBA, his current situation, and what the future may hold for the talented center.

Is DeMarcus Cousins retired? Where is he now?

Fortunately, Cousins is not yet calling it a career. He is still actively looking for a spot in the NBA. In January 2023, Boogie had a workout with the Los Angeles Lakers alongside Meyers Leonard. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said that the workouts were “great”. However, he was not called up for a spot. For the whole 2022-2023 season, Boogie went unsigned.

After almost winning a championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2019, Cousins signed with the Lakers for the 2019-2020 season. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a big year for him became a nightmare as he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a preseason workout. As a result, he missed the entire regular season and was eventually let go by Los Angeles.

Today, no team has signed the 32-year-old center yet. Though he’s had a workout with the Lakers, that’s the closest he has got to an NBA team thus far. He is still actively pursuing his basketball career. Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers reported that he is still receiving calls from Cousins. In the “All The Smoke” podcast, Myers told former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson about his conversation with Cousins.

“DeMarcus called me a month ago and he said, ‘Why am I not in the NBA?’ ” Myers said to Barnes and Jackson. “And I said, ‘You want that answer? … Because people are afraid of how you’re going to act.’ And he’s like ‘Why?’ And I said, ‘Well, whatever the reason is, it’s here now. And I like DeMarcus. You guys may know him. He’s just, I can’t blame him for him because of all he’s been through.”

Boogie’s Rise and Downfall

DeMarcus Cousins was a huge star in his prime. He may talk a lot of trash but he’s got the skills to back it up during his heyday. He started out strong in Sacramento and in just 5 years, Boogie became an All-Star and an All-NBA team member.

Cousins was arguably the best center from 2014 until 2017 when he put up 25.7 points, 12 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks. During his prime, he became a 4-time All-Star and received two All-NBA nods. His career was solid and he looked like a future Hall-of-Famer, although he hasn’t brought Sacramento to the playoffs since he was drafted.

Cousins was on the right path as a superstar. However, two things derailed his stardom – Injuries and off-court controversies.

In 2018, Cousins tore his left Achilles tendon which shortened his 2017-2018 season. Not only did he suffer a devastating injury, but he also neglected the Pelicans’ offer for a max contract because he badly wanted to win a championship. This led to his questionable move to Golden State and receiving a massive pay cut. He then suffered another injury in 2019, a torn ACL. A few weeks later, Boogie was charged with domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend. Top that with his temper on the court, everything seems to be going bad for the former superstar.
