The man dubbed Black Aquaman has been identified as 16-year-old Aaren. A statement from a family spokesperson confirmed Aaren as the young man seen in videos swimming across the river to defend the beaten security guard.
The statement praised Aaren’s bravery and called him a “cherished young hero.” At just 16, Aaren selflessly took action against racist violence, showcasing courage beyond his years. While further details about Aaren remain limited, his identity as Black Aquaman is now known. As a result, his willingness to intervene has earned him respect and admiration.
Minor Boat Dispute Turns Violent
The incident occurred Sunday evening at the busy Riverfront Park, where a riverboat was scheduled to dock. A group of white men had anchored their pontoon boat in the riverboat’s reserved docking area. When a Black security guard employed by the city asked them to move their boat, the men refused, and a verbal altercation ensued.
The security guard spoke calmly, but the white men became aggressive. After several minutes of arguing, one of the white men violently shoved the security guard to the ground. In a viral video, approximately 4 to 5 white men can be seen punching and kicking the guard as he lies helpless on the ground.
Security Guard Attacked, Black Aquaman Jumps In
This unprovoked attack sparked an immediate backlash and brave efforts to defend the beaten guard. A Black man witnessed the beating from across the river and heroically jumped in to swim to the scene.
When the swimmer arrived, he punched the white assailants, sending some to the ground. His courageous defense of the guard earned him the “Black Aquaman” nickname on social media.
Police Intervene as the Fight Escalated
- The argument quickly escalated into an all-out brawl along racial lines. More riverboat staff joined to defend their colleague against the white attackers.
- Within minutes of the melee erupting, Montgomery police arrived and detained several Black and white individuals. The beaten security guard was hospitalized for treatment of his injuries.
- The white men involved claimed they were wrongfully asked to move. However, many have condemned their violent overreaction as racist. The security guard was doing his job, they argued.
