Hajime Isayama dealt with complex themes of adversity, humanity, politics, and discrimination in Attack on Titan; making it entertaining enough for the anime and manga to become a mainstream phenomenon. The manga sales broke the 5-year-long record of One Piece when the Attack on Titan Anime came out in 2013. 

It has managed to take center stage in discussions throughout its run for its complexity, witty writing, and also it’s ending. The Attack on Titan ending is one of the most controversial endings in the ani-manga world. How does it end up becoming such a widespread discourse? Is the Attack on Titan anime over? This article will explain the ending of Attack on Titan for the anime and the manga. 

Is the Attack on Titan Anime over?

Attack on Titan manga finished in April 2021 after having a successful run for over 12 years. The final chapter that brought a close to the manga is Chapter 139. The manga was adapted into an anime in the year 2013. 

The anime has over four seasons. Season 4 was previously said to have two parts, but then a third part was announced. The third part is further split up into two special one-hour-long episodes.

 The first part aired in March 2023, and the second part will be broadcast in Fall 2023. So as of yet, the Attack on Titan Anime is not over. 

How does Attack on Titan end?

Here on out, the article contains manga spoilers. The manga ends with chapter 139. So far in the anime we’ve seen Jean, Connie, Mikasa, Armin, Reiner, and Levi heading to where Eren is. They are headed to Eren to stop the rumbling. Hange sacrificed herself to buy some time for the rest of them to catch up to Eren. 

  • In the manga, the events continue with the squad finding Eren. Armin attempts to talk things out with the Yeager brothers and manages to convince Zeke. 
  • Jean and Cart Titan behead Eren and the rest of them kill the parasitical being that was responsible for the Founding Titan’s powers. 
  • Eren returns to life once again and Mikasa remembers that she needs to enter the Titan’s mouth to put an end to it all. 
  • With the help of Levi, she enters the mouth of the Titan, cuts off Eren’s head, and kisses him goodbye.

In Chapter 139, we see Eren and Armin sharing a final dialogue. Eren reveals the truth behind his actions to his friend. He reiterates the similarities between Mikasa and Ymir; claiming that he wanted Mikasa to make a different choice from Ymir. Which will establish that Mikasa is more than just a slave to the Founding Titan.

He also tells Armin that he wanted his friends to stop him so that the world’s perception of the Eldians changes into something more positive. By this time, Eren had already wiped out 80% of humanity. Back in the real world, we see the Titans losing their powers and going back to being humans.

With the majority of manga readers hating on the ending of Attack of Titan, there’s a loud minority speaking in its favor as well. The way Attack on Titan Anime will handle the ending will also impact its perception. Anime has the advantage of spelling things out in many different ways as compared to the manga. 

The controversial ending has also led to fans wondering if the anime will have an original ending that is different from the manga. We’ll know for sure when the creators confirm it themselves or when the final part comes out in the fall of 2023.
