Mortal Kombat 1: Is it open-world?

Mortal Kombat 1 is perhaps the most anticipated fighting game of 2023, along with Street Fighter 6. The game will be released on Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on September 19, 2023. Developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games, MK1 has again excited its fanbase. With one major question surfacing on the internet: “Is MK1 open world?” it has received global attention again. With excitement comes a curious mind. It’s completely normal to be curious about a game that hasn’t been released yet, especially when the studio behind it hasn’t provided many details as well. Truly a bummer. But let’s do what we gamers do best: SPECULATE!

Mortal Kombat 1: Exploring the Possibility of an open-world Experience

In the latest installment of the Street Fighter franchise, it is seen that Capcom has introduced an open-world mode known as the World Tour mode. This feature in Street Fighter 6 allows players to create their characters and progress through an original storyline with an open-world environment to conquer and eventually become the best fighter the world has ever seen.

The feature in Street Fighter 6 is undoubtedly a game-changer in the gaming landscape. With immense anticipation surrounding Mortal Kombat 1, the fanbase wonders whether a similar feature will also be available in NetherRealm Studios x Warner Brothers’ latest game. So is MK1 open world? Let’s find out.

Is Mortal Kombat 1 open-world?

Nobody knows yet whether MK1 will be an open-world game or not. Over the years, it has become quite harder to guess what developers have in mind for their audience. While some Mortal Kombat games are known to have something like an interactive single-player mode, they were never claimed to be open-world. Yes, we are talking about the Konquest Mode, indeed.

What is the Konquest Mode?

The Konquest mode, found in several classic MK games like Mortal Kombat Deception, provided players with a pseudo-open-world environment with limited freedom. You had to complete a series of missions with each character in the game.

After each mission, a cutscene would play featuring a monk traveling to different places on the Konquest path. However, these cutscenes were purely for creating a sense of a journey and never really had to do anything with the gameplay or lore.

How is Konquest in MK different from World Tour in SF6?

This question is sure to arise in our curious minds. Mortal Kombat’s Konquest and Street Fighter 6‘s World Tour have several differences.

  • Konquest, as considered by gamers, is just a single-player mode in Mortal Kombat with an average storyline, but it offers highly enjoyable gaming mechanics, epic characters, and legendary battles. However, it doesn’t provide players with an open-world gaming experience; instead, it is a pseudo-open-world game that grants players a certain degree of freedom.
  • On the other hand, World Tour mode will give players a complete open-world experience with original customizable characters (something Konquest lacked). It features improved gaming mechanics, the key being the Skill Tree used to upgrade your character’s abilities.

While this is a major difference between the two titles’ most notable features, comparing them is unfair. Mainly because Konquest, which debuted in 2002’s Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, was ahead of its time. The entire fanbase of Mortal Kombat loved it. Also, as much as the World Tour mode of SF6 seems promising, one can never truly gauge its worth until they have tried the game themselves.

Conclusion

For now, we will still have to wait for the developers to release new updates about Mortal Kombat 1. Would we be able to experience an open-world environment in MK1? Can we kreate and kustomize (no typos were made) our characters of choice, explore the different realms, and claim the title of the world’s greatest warrior? These questions remain unanswered.
