5. The Platform (2019)

During the pandemic, Netflix released a very underrated futuristic horror-thriller project. “The Platform” is a Spanish dystopian thriller film that delves into social commentary and explores the extremes of human nature. The story is set in a vertical prison called “The Pit,” where two prisoners per floor are housed in stacked cells. The inmates are fed through a platform that descends from the top, filled with delicious food. However, as the platform moves down, the lower-level prisoners receive less and less food, leading to desperate and often violent behavior.

The movie shares thematic similarities with “Silo”, as both explore the implications of a confined society and the struggle for survival within oppressive systems. This film challenges viewers to contemplate issues of inequality, greed, and the human condition, leaving a lasting impact. It’s a must-watch for fans of thought-provoking dystopian narratives.

4. Pandorum (2009)

“Pandorum” is a psychological sci-fi thriller set aboard a spaceship carrying thousands of passengers in cryogenic sleep. As two astronauts awaken with no memory of their mission, they must navigate the ship’s dark corridors filled with terrifying creatures and uncover the truth behind their existence.

Starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster, Pandorum is eerily similar to Silo as the movie immerses viewers in a claustrophobic and suspenseful environment, unraveling a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. This underrated gem offers a gripping blend of horror and sci-fi, providing a thrilling and atmospheric experience. Pandorum was heavily underrated in a year (2009) filled with blockbusters such as The Blind Side, Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, and Up.

IMDb Rating: 6.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 28%

3. The Island (2005)

At first, everyone in the facility thought that if they win the lottery, they were going to a beautiful Island. However, “The Island” portrays a future where clones are used for organ harvesting. Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson), two clones living in a sterile facility, discover the truth about their existence and escape to the outside world.

Fans of “Silo” will appreciate the exploration of identity, ethics, and the consequences of unchecked technological advancements found in “The Island.” This thrilling sci-fi film, helmed by Michael Bay, combines heart-pounding action with philosophical questions, making it a must-watch for those who crave thought-provoking narratives. Although it has a different vibe from Silo, The Island had the same idea of two people questioning the reality of their existence.

IMDb Rating: 6.8/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 40%

2. Snowpiercer (2013)

Based on the post-apocalyptic and climate fiction novel of the same name, comes the movie adaptation starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, and Ed Harris. In a future where Earth has become a frozen wasteland, the remnants of humanity survive aboard a perpetually moving train called Snowpiercer. The train is divided by social class, and a revolution brews as the oppressed tail-section inhabitants strive to reach the front of the train, where the elite reside.

Much like The Platform, Snowpierce highlights thematic parallels between the class divisions and the societal structures depicted in the novels. This visually stunning film, directed by Bong Joon-ho, serves as a powerful social commentary while delivering intense action and unexpected twists. Although it was positively received by critics and viewers, Snowpiercer did not get a sequel.

Rotten Tomatoes: 95%

1. City of Ember (2008)

Nothing, absolutely nothing is closer to Silo’s story than the movie adaptation of Jeanne DuPrau’s sci-fi novel, City of Ember. The story takes place in an underground city, where inhabitants have lived for generations due to an unknown catastrophe on the surface. The City of Ember was created by the smartest people in the past so that future generations can survive the toxic and harsh surface. It was just supposed to last for 200 years, but the City has been running for more than that period. With the city’s power supply failing, two young friends, Lina (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon (Harry Treadaway), embark on a mission to uncover the city’s secrets and find a way to save their people.

Obviously, those who enjoyed Silo will most definitely enjoy the City of Ember. It has a very similar story and a similar goal. To get out of the place they are in and find out what’s outside the surface. The only difference is that the City of Ember had a great ending since Earth recovered after centuries and it was habitable again. On the other hand, we can’t really say the same for Silo.
