Starfield Guide: How to Dock your Ship

Did you just get your hands on Bethesda’s latest Space RPG? If yes, then welcome to our guide on how to dock your ship in Starfield! In this exciting space exploration game, mastering the art of docking is essential for progressing through the galaxy and undertaking thrilling adventures. Whether you’re looking to dock at a friendly space station or daringly board an enemy ship, we’ve got you covered.

How to Dock Your Ship in Starfield

Before you embark on your docking journey in Starfield, it’s important to note that this skill becomes available after completing an early story quest called “The Old Neighborhood.” This quest will introduce you to the Nova Galactic Staryard space station, orbiting the Moon of the Earth, where you’ll learn the ins and outs of docking from Sarah Morgan.

How to dock to a Space Station or Spaceship:

To dock your ship to a Space Station or Spaceship (non-hostile) in Starfield, follow the steps below:

1. Select Your Target:

  • Approach the space station or another ship you wish to dock with.
  • Press the “A” button on your Xbox controller or the “E” key on your PC keyboard.
  • This action will lock onto your target.

2. Close the Distance:

  • Ensure that your ship is within 500 meters of the target.
  • This proximity is crucial for initiating the docking process.

3. Initiate Docking:

  • With your target locked and the required distance maintained, hold down the “X” button on your controller or the “R” key on your keyboard.
  • This action will trigger a quick cutscene, and you’ll find yourself successfully docked.

4. Board or Depart:

  • Upon docking, you’ll see three options on your screen.
  • You can choose to board whatever you’re docked to, depart from it, or simply stand up within your ship if you prefer not to board immediately.
  • To board, hold the corresponding button, and you’re all set for your next adventure.

How to dock Enemy Spaceships:

Docking at enemy spaceships requires a different approach and some strategic thinking.

1. Disable Their Engines:

  • Before attempting to dock with an enemy ship, you must disable its engines.
  • You can achieve this by targeting and shooting the ship’s engines until you see a red “ENG” symbol next to their health bar.
  • If you have the Targeting skill under Tech, this task becomes more manageable.

2. Follow Standard Docking Procedure:

  • Once the enemy ship’s engines are disabled, follow the same docking procedure as mentioned earlier.
  • Lock onto the ship, maintain a 500-meter distance, and press the designated button to initiate docking.

3. Prepare for Action:

  • Be ready for action as you board the enemy ship.
  • You’ll face hostile forces and valuable loot to collect.
  • After looting the ship and dealing with adversaries, you have the option to leave, undock, or even commandeer the enemy ship.

Can you Fast-Travel While Docked?

While your ship is docked with another vessel, you won’t be able to fast-travel. To regain this ability, follow these steps:

  1. Exit the Docked Ship: Go through the airlock to exit the docked ship and return to your own.
  2. Get in the Pilot’s Seat: Once back in your ship, take your place in the pilot’s seat.
  3. Undock: To restore fast-travel capabilities, use the “Y” button on your controller or the Spacebar on your keyboard to undock from the other ship.

There you go! Now that you know how to dock your ship in Starfield, you’re ready to navigate the vast expanse of the galaxy, board spaceships, and explore thrilling new adventures.
