Bruins star Charlie McAvoy gets married in Boston Public Library

NHL superstar, Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy (Charles Patrick McAvoy Jr.) recently made the headlines after the 25-year-old athlete marries his college sweetheart, Kiley Sullivan. But, their exchange of vows was not the most intriguing part of the event. Instead, people were buzzing about where the wedding took place – inside the Boston Public Library.

McAvoy and Sullivan became one last Saturday in the very place they first met, at Boston University. The ice hockey icon was drafted 14th overall in 2016 by the Boston Bruins and has already had a fruitful career. On his official Instagram account, McAvoy announced that he and Kiley officially tied the knot in the Boston Public Library. “Mine forever”, the defenseman stated in his post. His fans were delighted about this news and were even more surprised they did the ceremony in the public library. On the other hand, the wedding’s guess list was even bigger. McAvoy’s current teammates Bruins defensemen Matt Grzelcyk, Connor Clifton, and Derek Forbort, goaltender Jeremy Swayman, and forwards Brad Marchand and Charlie Coyle were all in the event. Moreover, former Bruins players Tory Krug, Taylor Hall, and Tuukka Rask were also in attendance.

How can you book a wedding in the Boston Public Library?

Thankfully, couples need not be athletes, icons, or celebrities to book a wedding in the Boston Public Library. Last year, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced that BPL will be offering one-hour wedding ceremonies starting June 6, 2022. In a press conference last year, Wu explained why the city is making this initiative.

“Our Boston Public Libraries are some of Boston’s most treasured spaces, and many a bride or groom have dreamed about celebrating their wedding day at the Central Library in Copley Square,” Wu said. “This new program offering one-hour wedding celebrations in the Guastavino room at the library will provide another beautiful, intimate, affordable option for couples in Boston to celebrate their weddings in one of the most breathtaking spaces in our city. Thank you to our team at BPL for continuing to find ways to make their programs and services accessible to all Boston residents.”

To book a wedding in the Boston Public Library, here is everything you need to know:

  • As mentioned, couples who desire to be married in the BPL will be given one hour. However, the organizers would only allow any non-denominational wedding or marriage accepted by any Christian denomination.
  • The wedding will take place in the Guastavino Room and the rental fee will be $200.
  • Couples can bring in a maximum of 12 guests, excluding the official photographer and officiant (priest, minister, judge, or anybody that the couple chooses).
  • Previously, weddings can only be held on the first Monday of each month. However, this was changed and BPL now has select Mondays to choose from.
  • Wedding reservations are only allowed 90 days to 14 days before the event proper.
  • To apply for a reservation, fill out a form on the BPL’s website: https://www.bpl.org/1-hour-wedding-ceremony/.
