PBA: What could be John Amores’s role in NorthPort Batang Pier?

John Amores drafted by Northport Batang Pier

Who knew that we were about to enter the controversial John Amores’ redemption arc this year? Former Jose Rizal University guard John Amores really turned his basketball career around. From being expelled from his college and being barred from the NCAA, Amores is slowly recovering from his predicament. Amores, 24, was drafted in the 2023 PBA Rookie draft with the 51st overall pick by the NorthPort Batang Pier. Despite his bad reputation, a PBA team took a chance at Amores. But, what could he offer to NorthPort? What will be his role in this team moving forward?

John Amores is not just a brawler, he’s also a baller

Admit it or not, John Amores is a talented basketball player. Although his previous acts supersede his skills, there’s no denying that the former JRU standout is a baller. Every time his name comes up, people remember him for wreaking havoc against the whole College of St. Benilde players on November 8, 2022, in an NCAA season 98 match.

After the incident, Amores was expelled from JRU. Subsequently, the NCAA officials have decided to give Amores an indefinite ban. This set of chain reactions led to his college career ending prematurely.

However, Amores recovered by playing in other leagues

The 6-foot-2 shooting guard made his way to Zamboanga as he joined the Valientes in their appearance in the ASEAN Basketball League. Shortly after, Amores took his talents to play for Muntinlupa in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) where he turned heads. His defense and ability to score under the basket made him a valuable asset to any team. Not only that but Amores can also create his own shot and go head-to-head even against taller defenders.

Before being sacked by JRU Heavy Bombers, Amores averaged a decent 9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 13 games.

As a 5th-rounder, there is no guarantee for Amores despite being picked by NorthPort. The 24-year-old stud still has to work for a spot on the team’s roster. Right now, Amores is an unsigned player and still has to wait for a contract. Meanwhile, NorthPort has a list of talented young guys like Zavier Lucero (5th), Cade Flores (11th), Brent Paraiso (29th), and Fran Yu (41st) who were all drafted before Amores. Compared to these guys, Amores seems like an average player. Regardless, there is still time for him to improve and show his haters (and fans) what he can do.

On the other hand, John Amores needs to keep away from fights and scuffles that could once again label him as a brawler, hothead, war freak, and a guy with a short fuse. That being said, the pressure is super heavy for Amores. Thankfully, he is in his redemption arc and people are rooting for him now.
