One Piece: Will Kuzan betray Blackbeard?

Kuzan and Blackbeard

Kuzan, better known by his codename Aokiji is a truly enigmatic and unexplainable individual even by Marine standards. Throughout the course of the story, his actions have always been ambiguous, often blurring the lines between a hero and a villain. Now that he’s teamed up with Blackbeard, will there come a time when Kuzan betrays Blackbeard? Let’s find out.

Kuzan’s Justice

Even though the Marines are affiliated with the World Government and usually do their bidding without question, many Marines have their own concept of Justice from which they don’t falter, even to uphold orders from the higher-ups. Kuzan is one such Marine who has shown to act independently on several occasions. After the recent revelations about him and Garp, it is obvious where he inherited that trait from.

  • We also know that he was extremely adamant about his ideology of justice and was ready to take Akainu on for the position of Admiral since he couldn’t accept Sakazuki’s definition of Justice.
  • However, after losing the battle at Punk Hazard, Kuzan chose to leave the Marines, presumably to enact his own Justice elsewhere. His joining the Blackbeard Pirates could also be due to that reason.

Garp’s Influence

We got to see how close Kuzan and Garp were from his academy days and based on those interactions we can see how much he looked up to Garp. It is safe to assume that he’d have inherited many of Garp’s traits and ideals. This means the likelihood of Kuzan being outright ‘Evil’ or someone with little regard for public life seems very, very low.

  • His recent fight with Garp was also given an ambiguous conclusion following which Garp was declared missing.
  • This isn’t exactly the first time something like this is happening as we already saw such an incident with Jaguar D. Saul, who was supposed to be dead due to Kuzan.
  • Instead, we saw him alive and well a few chapters ago. This stands as evidence of Kuzan’s potential double game with Blackbeard.

As a former Marine, a Yonko Commander, and one of the most dangerous Logia types in the Grand Line, Kuzan is almost destined to play a very crucial role in the future, at least according to the speculative evidence we have so far.  In the past, he has subtly helped the Straw Hats, but that doesn’t mean he fully supports them, which means his betraying Blackbeard would be in line with what we’ve seen before.

  • Much like Garp, Kuzan seems to have a very conflicted psyche when it comes to upholding Justice as per the government’s dictation.
  • However, he is not as vocal as his mentor about his predicament and instead chooses to showcase his justice through actions.
  • Kuzan must’ve joined Blackbeard due to some crucial reason, and it is possible that he’d betray him after his goals are achieved.

Conclusion

Both during his days as a Vice Admiral and after, Kuzan always had a niche popularity within the One Piece fanbase and it only seems to be growing with the recent chapters revelations. It is possible that he’d betray Blackbeard at a very crucial moment, thereby weakening him significantly when his guard is down.
