Despite not being used to make any potion in the game, the Mallowsweet herb is a must-have for players to complete Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy. Merlin Trials are small, puzzle-type challenges meant to test your wit.
Beginning Merlin Trials
Once you meet researcher Nora Treadwell near Lower Hogsfield, you learn about the connection between Mallowsweet and Merlin Trials. She tries to prove her point by giving players five Mallowsweets.
You have to sprinkle some of the Mallowsweet herb over the mechanic to unlock it. Only after solving this puzzle by lighting the brazier on fire using the Incendio spell, the Merlin Trials side quest begins in Hogwarts Legacy.

In Hogwarts Legacy, players can buy Mallowsweet from multiple sellers in the world, including the ones in Hogsmeade. Alternatively, players can purchase Mallowsweet seeds and plant them in the Room of Requirement in Hogwarts Legacy.
- If you choose to plant Mallowsweet seeds, you can get an infinite amount before each Merlin Trials side quest. For that, the first and most obvious step is to unlock Hogsmeade, as this is where you purchase the Mallowsweet seeds from.
- Once you get to Hogsmeade, head to The Magic Neep shop where you can buy Mallowsweet seeds for 200 Galleons. Now that you have the seeds in hand, the next logical step is to plant them.
Planting Mallowsweet seeds
In Hogwarts Legacy, the Room of Requirement is the best location to plant and grow the Mallowsweet seeds in hand. This is because it allows players to create their own potting tables. Mallowsweet can be planted in pots of all sizes.
But in some cases, the Room of Requirement may not be available until a good portion of the main quest is completed. Until then, players can use the Herbology Classroom’s Pot to grow the Mallowsweet herb.
